Overview
prEN ISO 4028 / ISO/DIS 4028:2025 specifies the characteristics, dimensions and delivery requirements for hexagon socket set screws with dog point (also called dog-point set screws). The standard covers metric coarse pitch threads from M1.6 up to M30 for steel and M1.6 up to M24 for stainless steel, and applies to product grade A fasteners. It clarifies dimensional forms (long and short dog points), gauging, surface condition options and marking/labelling for procurement and quality control.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & intended use: Defines set screws not intended for tensile loading; used to secure components by local bearing on the dog point.
- Thread sizes: Metric coarse pitches M1.6–M30 (steel) and M1.6–M24 (stainless steel).
- Dimensions & forms: Detailed socket and point geometry, options for long (LD) and short (SD) dog points, and permissible broached-socket alternatives.
- Tolerances & gauging: Thread tolerance class references (e.g., ISO 965-1) and socket gauging per ISO 23429.
- Mechanical properties: Hardness classes and selection options linked to ISO 898-5 (steel) and ISO 3506-3 (stainless steel).
- Surface condition & coatings: Default delivery “as processed” for steel; “clean and bright” or passivated for stainless; electroplated and zinc-flake options per ISO 4042 and ISO 10683.
- Quality & inspection: Acceptance inspection and surface discontinuity limits referenced to ISO 3269 and ISO 6157-1.
- Marking and labelling:
- Product marking not required unless agreed.
- Package labelling must include: ISO 4028 reference, thread size and nominal length, material grade/hardness, surface condition, manufacturer ID, lot number and quantity.
- Designation example: “Hexagon socket set screw ISO 4028 – M6 × 12 – 45H”.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Fastener manufacturers and machinists - to produce compliant hexagon socket set screws (dog point) with correct geometry and tolerances.
- Mechanical designers and OEMs - to specify reliable locating/locking fasteners in assemblies (gearboxes, couplings, machinery fixtures).
- Procurement and quality inspection teams - to verify deliveries, labelling, acceptance inspection and traceability.
- Standards committees and testing labs - for harmonized gauging and testing methods.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that
this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at
www.iso.org/patents. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, Subcommittee SC 11, Fasteners
with metric external thread, in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN)
Technical Committee CEN/TC 185, Fasteners, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation
between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 4028:2003), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— M30 has been added for steel hexagon socket set screws;
— for d ≤1,00, the tolerance of d has been modified to h13;
p max p
— for z ≤1,00, the tolerance of z has been modified to +IT13 0;
min
— approximate masses have been deleted in length table;
— non-ferrous metal screws have been deleted (as a consequence of the withdrawal of ISO 8839);
— for stainless steel fasteners, “Plain” has been changed to “Clean and bright”, and “Passivated” has been
added in Table 3;
— specifications for marking and labelling have been added as Clause 6;
— Annex A has been added for cut-off slugs at machined set screws with dog point.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www.iso.org/members.html.

1 Scope
This document specifies the characteristics of hexagon socket set screws with dog point, with metric coarse
pitch threads M1,6 to M30 for steel and M1,6 to M24 for stainless steel, and with product grade A.
Set screws are not intended for use under tensile load.
If, in certain cases other specifications are requested, hardness classes and stainless steel grades can be
selected from ISO 898-5 or ISO 3506-3, and dimensional options from ISO 888, ISO 965-1 or ISO 4753.
