General Information
Overview
EN 2798:2019 is a CEN European Standard in the aerospace series that specifies the required properties for fluorocarbon rubber (FKM) formulated for low compression set and hardness 80 IRHD. The standard targets FKM used in aerospace sealing and elastomer applications where resistance to air, hydrocarbon and synthetic oils and fuels at elevated temperatures is critical.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Defines material properties of FKM (symbol per ISO 1629) with low compression set and 80 IRHD hardness for aerospace use.
- Temperature service range:
- Continuous service: −20 °C to 225 °C
- Intermittent service: −20 °C to 250 °C
- Mechanical and physical requirements (qualification and batch acceptance):
- Hardness: 80 IRHD (batch acceptance test)
- Tensile strength: minimum 11 MPa (batch acceptance)
- Elongation at break: minimum 120% (batch acceptance)
- TR10 (low temperature): ≤ −12 °C
- Compression set: after 70 h at 200 °C ≤ 25% (batch acceptance)
- Density: batch variation limited relative to qualification value (per clause)
- Aging and fluid exposure tests: Specifies tests after exposure to defined test media (per ISO 1817) with conditions such as 70 h at elevated temperatures; permissible changes in mass, tensile strength and elongation are limited (e.g., mass variation and ≤ 20% reduction in tensile/elongation for certain exposures). Hardness change allowances are also specified (±5 IRHD in some conditions).
- Conformity and testing: All tests required for qualification; a subset (marked “∗”) is required for batch acceptance. EN 3207 is referenced for technical specification requirements.
Practical applications
- Seals, O-rings, gaskets and molded elastomer parts in aircraft fuel, hydraulic and engine systems where:
- High temperature resistance and low compression set are required to maintain sealing performance
- Exposure to air, hydrocarbons, synthetic oils and fuels occurs
- Typical users: material engineers, seal designers, aerospace OEMs, procurement/specification staff, quality and acceptance testing laboratories, and elastomer compound formulators.
Who should use this standard
- Aerospace design and systems engineers specifying elastomer components
- Suppliers and manufacturers of FKM compounds and finished seals
- Quality assurance teams performing batch acceptance and qualification testing
- Regulatory and procurement teams ensuring material conformity for aircraft service conditions
