Advanced technical ceramics - Mechanical properties of ceramic composites at room temperature - Part 5: Determination of interlaminar shear strength by short span bend test (three points)
This part of EN 658 specifies the conditions for the determination of the interlaminar shear strength matrix composite materials with continuous fibre reinforcement at ambient temperature, by subjecting a test specimen to a short-span, three points, bend test. The method applies to unidirectionally and bidirectionally reinforced ceramic matrix composites, as well as to tridirectional composites with weak reinforcement in the third direction.

Overview
EN 658-5:2002 (CEN) defines a standardized laboratory method to determine the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of ceramic matrix composites with continuous fibre reinforcement at room temperature. The test uses a short-span, three-point bend configuration to induce interlaminar shear failure in unidirectional (1D), bidirectional (2D) and certain tridirectional (xD) ceramic composites. The document is part of the EN 658 family covering mechanical properties of advanced technical ceramics.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Measure the maximum force (F) that causes interlaminar shear during a short-span three-point bend; test at constant crosshead displacement.
- Calculation: ILSS (MPa) = 3F / (4 b h), where F = shear failure force (N), b = mean specimen width (mm), h = mean specimen thickness (mm).
- Specimen dimensions (recommended):
- Thickness h = 3 mm
- Width b = 10 mm
- Support span S = 15 mm (S = 5 h − 1 if h differs)
- Total length l0 = 20 to 25 mm
- Plane parallelism after machining ≤ 0.05 mm
- Apparatus:
- Test machine meeting EN ISO 7500-1 grade 1 for force measurement accuracy.
- Test jig with two outer support rollers and one loading roller; roller diameter 4–10 mm; roller axes parallel within 0.01 mm/mm; inner roller centered within 0.2 mm.
- Measuring devices accurate to 0.1 mm (micrometers per ISO 3611).
- Procedure requirements:
- Constant displacement rate chosen to cause failure within ~1 minute (typically 0.5–1 mm/min).
- At least five valid test results required.
- Record force vs. time, specimen dimensions, failure mode and fracture location.
- Validity and limitations:
- Tests invalid if conditions, fracture mode/location, or other key data are not recorded.
- Note: results from this method are not directly comparable with ILSS values from other EN 658 methods; exercise care when using values for design.
Applications and users
EN 658-5 is used by:
- Materials and mechanical test laboratories validating ceramic matrix composite performance.
- R&D teams developing advanced technical ceramics and composite processing methods.
- Quality assurance and certification bodies verifying interlaminar shear behavior.
- Engineers in industries employing CMCs (aerospace, energy & turbines, automotive braking and high‑temperature components) who need standardized comparative data for material selection.
Practical value: standardized ILSS data help assess laminar integrity, compare processing routes, and screen materials for shear-sensitive applications.
