Overview
EN 4098:2007 specifies requirements for aerospace steel FE-PL1507 (40CrMoV12) in the form of remelted, hardened and tempered forgings with external diameter De ≤ 50 mm. Approved by CEN in 2007, this material standard defines chemical composition, melting method, heat treatment routes, mechanical properties and inspection/testing rules for high-strength aerospace forgings (Rm 1 250–1 400 MPa).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material designation: FE-PL1507 (40CrMoV12), consumable-electrode remelted.
- Form and size: Forgings (De ≤ 50 mm).
- Chemical composition (typical limits):
- C: 0.35–0.43% | Si: 0.10–0.35% | Mn: 0.40–0.70%
- P ≤ 0.015% | S ≤ 0.010% | Cr: 3.00–3.50% | Mo: 0.80–1.10%
- Ni ≤ 0.30% | Sn ≤ 0.025% | V: 0.15–0.25%
- Heat treatment: Austenitizing specified at about 920–940 °C with quench and tempering. Tempering conditions require final treatment at ≥ 600 °C; exact sequences (OQ/AQ options) are defined in the standard.
- Mechanical properties (hardened & tempered):
- Tensile strength Rm = 1 250–1 400 MPa
- Proof (0.2% offset) ≥ 1 030 MPa
- Elongation A ≥ 10%, reduction of area Z ≥ 35%
- Hardness range 375–401 HB (normalized/annealed condition ≤ 277 HB)
- Impact: KV ≥ 30 J (notch direction T)
- Microstructure & quality: Grain size (G ≥ 7), macro/microstructure and batch uniformity per EN 2157-3.
- Special notes: Typical use cited as a low-alloy general purpose steel suitable for nitriding; product qualification program to be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
Applications
EN 4098:2007 is intended for aerospace forgings requiring very high tensile strength and toughness in small-diameter components (De ≤ 50 mm). Typical uses include critical aircraft components and small forged parts where remelting, controlled heat treatment and nitriding suitability are required for wear and fatigue resistance.
Who uses this standard
