Jewellery - Ring-sizes - Definition, measurement and designation (ISO 8653:2016)

ISO 8653:2016 specifies a method to measure the ring-size using a ring stick with defined characteristics, which is mainly used during manufacturing steps, and specifies the designation of the ring-size.
NOTE For jeweller-consumer relationships, the finger size is measured with a finger gauge set made up of a ring for each size with the same diameter and tolerance than the ring stick ones.

Nakit - Velikosti prstanov - Definicija, meritve in označevanje (ISO 8653:2016)

Overview

EN ISO 8653:2026 – Jewellery - Ring-sizes - Definition, measurement and designation (ISO 8653:2016) is an international standard adopted by CEN for the consistent measurement and designation of finger ring sizes. The standard provides a unified method for determining ring sizes using a defined ring stick, facilitating accurate communication of ring dimensions across the international jewellery industry. By addressing the measurement, designation, and definition of ring sizes for a variety of ring profiles and shapes, this standard helps reduce discrepancies and conflicts between manufacturers, brands, and retailers.

The standard is applicable throughout all stages of jewellery production and sale, ensuring ring sizes are specified and understood consistently in manufacturing, quality control, and consumer relations.

Key Topics

  • Ring-size Definition: The standard defines the ring-size as the circumference of the largest cylinder that can be inserted into the ring.
  • Measurement Method: Specifies measurement using a metric ring stick with set characteristics, crucial for accurate and repeatable results.
  • Ring Stick Requirements: Outlines precise technical characteristics for the ring stick, such as length, sizing range (sizes 41 to 76), tolerance, and material (metal or similarly durable material).
  • Inside Profiles: Distinction between rings with rounded inside profiles and flat inside profiles, with corresponding measurement methods.
  • Special Ring Shapes: Provides guidance for measuring rings with unique shapes, such as signet-rings, rings with mountings, interlaced rings, and square rings, which may require special positioning on the ring stick.
  • Size Designation: Details how to designate ring sizes according to the standard, both in documentation (e.g., "Ring-size ISO 8653 - 43") and on the finished product (e.g., "43").

Applications

EN ISO 8653:2026 brings significant practical value to various stakeholders in the jewellery industry, supporting:

  • Manufacturers: Ensures process consistency and accurate sizing during the production of rings through standardized measurement tools and methods.
  • Retailers: Facilitates seamless transactions and customer trust by providing reliably sized products that match consumer expectations.
  • Quality Control: Standardizes ring measurement across production sites and brands, reducing costly misunderstandings about sizing.
  • Consumers: Assures buyers that ring sizes are precise and consistent, especially when purchasing high-value or custom-made jewellery.
  • International Trade: Supports harmonization across countries, making it easier to market and sell rings internationally without requiring conversions or local adjustments.

The standard's focus on both manufacturer and consumer perspectives, including the use of finger gauge sets for customer sizing, ensures it covers all practical scenarios in the supply chain.

Related Standards

For robust quality management and product consistency in the jewellery sector, the following standards are relevant:

  • ISO 8654 – Jewellery – Ring-sizes – International standardization: Addresses international standardization of ring sizes further supporting cross-border consistency.
  • ISO 9001 – Quality Management Systems: Provides overarching principles for quality assurance in manufacturing, including in the jewellery industry.
  • ISO/TC 174 Standards: Covers additional technical specifications related to jewellery and precious metals, including safety, alloys, and other product specifications.
  • EN 28653:1992: The previous standard superseded by EN ISO 8653:2026.

By adhering to EN ISO 8653:2026, businesses in the jewellery sector can ensure traceability, resolve size discrepancies, and deliver quality-assured products that meet international expectations. This facilitates a reliable marketplace for both industry professionals and consumers seeking precisely sized rings.
