Overview

EN 2714-005:2006 is a CEN aerospace product standard that specifies the characteristics of CO2 laser printable, single- and multicore screened (spiral) and jacketed electrical cables intended for on‑board aircraft electrical systems. The standard covers cables designed to operate in the temperature range −55 °C to 260 °C, and requires that cables also be markable by hot-stamp or ink-jet printing in accordance with EN 3838.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and construction

    • Applicable to 1 to 4 core cables (2–4 core cables are twisted; filler cores not permitted).
    • Conductors conform to EN 2267-003; screen is a nickel‑plated copper stranded spiral (strand dimensions in the standard’s Table 1).
    • Outer jacket: polyimide layer (nominal 30 µm) with fluorocarbon coatings (2.5 µm each side), a PTFE wrap layer (0.07 mm) and a dispersion fluorocarbon top coat (≥15 µm) to accept CO2 laser marking.
    • Overlap and winding direction requirements are specified for jacket layers.
  • Size and electrical parameters

    • Nominal conductor sections covered by the standard include 0.15 mm² up to 5 mm² (AWG equivalents and values for linear resistance, external diameter and mass are given in Table 1).
  • Marking

    • Cables must accept CO2 laser marking; hot-stamp and ink-jet marking are allowed and must comply with EN 3838 for user‑applied markings.
  • Test and performance matrix

    • Tests referenced from EN 3475-100 and EN 2235 include visual, dimensional, ohmic resistance, voltage proof, insulation resistance, surface resistance, accelerated ageing, shrinkage/delamination (specified temperatures), thermal endurance (40 000 h at 260 °C), flammability (extinguishing time ≤ 3 s), notch propagation, scrape abrasion, plating continuity/adherence/thickness, smoke density and toxicity, strippability and permanence of marking, among others.
  • Quality and designation

    • Quality assurance follows EN 9133; designation, identification, packaging and delivery lengths are referenced to EN 2235 and EN 2714-002.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Aerospace OEMs and Tier‑1 suppliers specifying high‑temperature, screened, jacketed wiring for aircraft.
  • Cable and wiring harness manufacturers producing laser‑printable, high‑temperature cables.
  • Avionics integrators, procurement engineers, maintenance and certification bodies requiring verified material, marking and test criteria for on‑board electrical systems.
  • Laser marking and printing vendors ensuring compatibility of marking processes with aerospace cable jackets.
