Overview

prEN ISO 20872 / ISO 20872 defines a standardized method to determine the tear strength of footwear outsoles using trouser-shaped test pieces. Developed under the CEN/ISO parallel process (ISO/TC 216 and CEN/TC 309), the method applies irrespective of outsole material (polymeric, elastomeric, semi‑expanded/cellular or leather). It specifies specimen preparation, conditioning, test apparatus, test procedure and how to report results for consistent, comparable tear-strength data.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test specimen: Trouser test pieces are cut with a specified die; leather outsoles are tested at full thickness. Specimens types are defined as S2 (two original skins), S1 (one skin), S0 (no skin) and results must be based on specimens of the same type.
  • Nick/cut: A nick is produced to a depth of 40 mm ± 5 mm, with the last ~1 mm made using a sharp razor blade.
  • Conditioning and atmosphere: Samples and test pieces must be sampled and conditioned per ISO 17709 and standard atmospheres per ISO 18454 (minimum conditioning 24 h).
  • Thickness measurement: Use a thickness gauge loaded so the presser foot applies 10 kPa ± 3 kPa; presser foot diameter 10 mm ± 0.1 mm; scale division 0.01 mm.
  • Tensile-testing machine: Machine must comply with ISO 7500-1 (class 2 accuracy) and operate at a traverse rate of 100 mm/min ± 10 mm/min. Low-inertia machines with autographic force recording are recommended. Grips must tighten automatically and ensure symmetric alignment.
  • Tear strength calculation: Tear strength T (N/mm) = F / d, where F is the median peak force (median of peak values according to prescribed methods for different trace patterns) and d is the median thickness (mm). Results are the average of three determinations.
  • Reporting: Test report must include results (per clause 7), specimen thickness, full sample description, test method reference, date, specimen type, deviations and atmospheric conditions.

Applications and users

This standard is used for:

  • Quality control and acceptance testing of outsole materials and finished footwear
  • Material selection and product development (R&D) to compare tear resistance
  • Supplier verification and procurement specifications
  • Failure analysis and durability assessment in manufacturing and testing laboratories

Typical users: footwear manufacturers, material suppliers, third‑party testing labs, product designers, standards bodies and procurement specialists.

ISO/WD 20872
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 20872 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 216, Footwear, Subcommittee SC , and by
Technical Committee CEN/TC 309, Footwear in collaboration.
