Overview
prEN ISO 10511 / ISO/DIS 10511:2016 covers the specification and characteristics of prevailing torque hexagon thin nuts (with non‑metallic insert) for coarse‑pitch metric threads. It applies to nominal diameters M3 through M39 and defines product grades A (≤ M16) and B (> M16). The draft standard adds prevailing‑torque features to dimensions based on ISO 4035 and includes functional, material and finish requirements for both steel and stainless‑steel nuts with polymeric inserts (e.g., polyamide). Note: the project record indicates the ISO/CEN processing status should be verified - the project was recorded as cancelled in ISO/CS on 2017‑11‑17; always check the ISO or CEN dataservice for current status.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Parts covered: Prevailing torque thin hex nuts with a non‑metallic insert (designation symbol PTNM).
- Thread range: Coarse pitch metric threads from M3 to M39, with preferred and non‑preferred thread tables.
- Product grades:Grade A for D ≤ M16; Grade B for D > M16.
- Materials & property classes: Steel and stainless steel per ISO 898‑2 and ISO 3506‑2; specific property classes and quenching/tempering rules are referenced.
- Insert material: Example insert given as polyamide; shape of prevailing torque element is at the manufacturer’s discretion.
- Dimensional & tolerance rules: Dimensions correspond to ISO 4035; thread tolerance class 6H is specified; chamfer angle updated to 110°–120°.
- Functional and mechanical tests: Functional requirements reference ISO 2320 (prevailing torque type nuts) and acceptance per ISO 3269.
- Surface finishes and coatings: Electroplating guidance per ISO 4042, zinc‑flake per ISO 10683, passivation per ISO 16048. Surface discontinuities per ISO 6157‑2.
- Design cautions: Thin nuts (style 0) have reduced loadability and are not intended to resist thread stripping; thin nuts used as jam nuts must be paired with regular or high nuts.
Applications and who uses it
- Fastener manufacturers for design, production and marking of prevailing‑torque thin nuts with non‑metallic inserts.
- Mechanical designers and OEMs (automotive, industrial machinery, electronics) specifying self‑locking thin nuts for space‑constrained assemblies.
- Procurement and quality assurance teams referencing material classes, mechanical properties and acceptance inspection criteria.
- Maintenance and assembly engineers for correct use (e.g., jam‑nut pairing, torque behavior).
Related standards
- ISO 4035 (hexagon thin nuts), ISO 2320 (prevailing torque nuts), ISO 898‑2, ISO 3506‑2, ISO 4042, ISO 10683, ISO 3269, ISO 6157‑2, ISO/TR 16224.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national
standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally
carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a
technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee.
International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in
the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
