Overview
prEN 13832-3 rev - "Footwear protecting against chemicals - Part 3" (CEN) specifies requirements for all‑rubber and all‑polymeric footwear constructed to be highly resistant to chemicals under laboratory conditions. It is focused on molded or vulcanized boots and shoes (not made of leather) intended as personal protective equipment (PPE) for chemical exposure. The standard is used together with EN 13832‑1 (terminology & test methods) and EN ISO 20344/20345/20346/20347 (footwear test methods and classifications).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification
- Applies to classification II: entirely vulcanised (all‑rubber) and entirely moulded (all‑polymeric) footwear.
- Leather footwear is excluded.
- Designs permitted
- Specific upper heights/designs (low shoe, ankle boot, knee/half‑knee, thigh) are defined; extended upper variants allowed for some designs.
- Chemical resistance testing
- Degradation resistance and permeation resistance are core requirements.
- Footwear must be tested on both sole and upper using at least three chemicals from the defined list (examples: acetone, dichloromethane, toluene, nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, isopropanol, hydrogen peroxide).
- Permeation performance levels
- Five performance levels defined by breakthrough times:
- Level 1: 121–240 min … up to Level 5: no permeation after 1 921 min.
- Minimum performance for EN 13832‑3 marking is level 1 for the selected chemicals.
- Five performance levels defined by breakthrough times:
- Post‑exposure physical requirements
- After degradation tests, measured properties (tear resistance, elongation, hardness) must meet specified minimums (referenced to EN ISO methods).
- Additional and optional properties
- If claimed, footwear must meet extra requirements (marked symbols): penetration resistance (P), energy absorption (E), thermal insulation HI/CI, anti‑static (A), conductive (C), metatarsal (M), cut resistance (CR), hot contact resistance (HRO), ankle protection (AN), etc.
- Marking & documentation
- Mandatory marking: size, manufacturer, type, production date/quarter, reference to EN 13832‑3 and tested chemical letter codes, and toe‑protection energy rating (100J / 200J).
- User leaflet and operating instructions are required.
Applications and who uses it
- Designed for manufacturers and designers of chemical‑resistant boots and shoes, test laboratories, conformity assessors and procurement/specifiers responsible for PPE in:
- Laboratories and research facilities
- Chemical and pharmaceutical production
- Maintenance, cleaning, waste‑water treatment and decontamination teams
- Emergency responders and industrial safety managers
- Useful for safety officers specifying chemical‑resistant footwear performance, and for suppliers demonstrating compliance with European PPE requirements.

The applicability of a requirement to a particular classification is indicated in the table by the following.
X indicates that the requirement shall be met. In some cases the requirement relates only to particular materials
within the classification, e.g. pH value of leather components. This does not mean that other materials are
precluded from use.
O indicates that if the component part exists, the requirement shall be met.
NOTE The absence of X or O indicates that no requirement is made.
