Aerospace series - Circuit breakers, single-pole, temperature compensated, rated current 1 A to 25 A - Part 005: With polarized signal contact - Product standard

This standard specifies the characteristics of single-pole circuit breakers, temperature compensated with a rated current from 1 A to 25 A, used in aircraft on-board circuits at a temperature between - 55 °C and 125 °C and at a maximum altitude of Z  22 000 m.
These circuits breakers are operated by a push-pull type single push button (actuator), with delayed action "trip-free" tripping with a polarized signal contact which is open when main contacts are closed, and inversely.
They will continue to function up to the short-circuit current.

Overview

EN 2995-005:2006 - Aerospace series product standard for single‑pole, temperature‑compensated circuit breakers (1 A to 25 A) with polarized signal contact. Published by CEN, this standard defines the characteristics, mechanical and electrical requirements, test conditions and marking/delivery rules for push‑pull, trip‑free circuit breakers intended for aircraft on‑board circuits operating between −55 °C and 125 °C and up to 22 000 m altitude.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & function
    • Single‑pole circuit breakers, rated 1 A to 25 A, temperature compensated and trip‑free (delayed action).
    • Operated by a single push‑pull actuator; includes a polarized signal contact that is open when main contacts are closed (and vice versa).
    • Designed to continue functioning up to specified short‑circuit currents.
  • Electrical characteristics
    • Nominal voltages: 28 V DC and 115 V AC (360–800 Hz).
    • Signal contact diode spec: max 0.5 A at 125 °C, peak repetitive reversal ≥ 800 V, JANTX quality per MIL‑S‑19500.
    • Voltage drop, tripping thresholds, overload trip times and short‑circuit performance are defined in tabular form (see standard for exact values).
  • Mechanical & environmental
    • Defined dimensions, mass (max 28 g including hardware for delivery code A), panel mounting and terminals per referenced figures and TR 6083.
    • Vibration, shock and endurance tests specified (combined vibration at elevated temperatures, 50 gn shock, thousands of load/no‑load operations).
    • Tightening torques and recommended contact insertion/removal tools are listed.
  • Tests & safety
    • Short‑circuit performance and dielectric strength requirements referenced to EN 3841‑305 and related aerospace test methods.
    • Insulation resistance, corrosion, humidity and contaminant resistance per EN 2995‑001.

Applications and users

  • Who uses EN 2995-005:2006
    • Aerospace electrical designers and system engineers specifying protection components for aircraft on‑board power systems.
    • Avionics component manufacturers developing or certifying temperature‑compensated circuit breakers with polarized signaling.
    • Test laboratories and certification bodies performing electrical/mechanical qualification and environmental testing.
    • Maintenance, procurement and OEM teams ensuring parts comply with European aerospace standards.
  • Practical applications
    • Overcurrent protection and signaling in aircraft electrical distribution panels, avionics racks and cockpit systems where temperature extremes and high altitude operation are critical.
