Overview
ISO/DIS 4027 / prEN ISO 4027 defines requirements for hexagon socket set screws with truncated cone point (TC). It covers metric coarse-pitch threads from M1,6 up to M30 for steel and up to M24 for stainless steel, and applies to product grade A. The standard specifies dimensions, tolerances, materials, surface conditions, marking and labelling, and acceptance criteria. Note: set screws covered by ISO 4027 are not intended for use under tensile load.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Dimensions and form: Detailed socket and point geometry (including alternative broached socket), and nominal lengths with short/regular length options. Symbols and dimensions follow ISO 225.
- Thread sizes: Metric coarse threads M1,6 to M30 (steel) and M1,6 to M24 (stainless).
- Product grade: Grade A set screws only.
- Materials and hardness:
- Steel: typical hardness class noted (e.g., 45H).
- Stainless steel: listed grades and hardness classes (e.g., A1–12H, A2–21H, A3–21H, A4–21H, A5–21H).
- Tolerances and gauging: Thread tolerance class 6g, tolerances for socket dimensions and minor diameters, and references to ISO 965-1, ISO 4759-1 and ISO 23429 for gauging.
- Surface condition and coatings: Default delivery conditions are “as processed” for steel and “clean and bright” (with optional passivation) for stainless steel. Coatings are referenced to ISO 4042 and ISO 10683 (zinc flake), with surface discontinuity limits per ISO 6157-1.
- Marking and labelling:
- Product marking is optional unless agreed.
- Package labelling must include ISO 4027 reference, thread size and length, hardness/grade info, surface condition, manufacturer ID, lot number and quantity.
- Acceptance and inspection: Acceptance inspection per ISO 3269; mechanical properties referenced to ISO 898-5 (steel) and ISO 3506-3 (stainless).
Applications and users
ISO 4027 is essential for:
- Fastener manufacturers (production, quality control, tooling and gauging)
- Mechanical designers and OEMs specifying set screws for assemblies (e.g., collars, couplings, gear hubs) where compressive or shear holding-not tensile loading-is required
- Procurement and inspection teams ensuring conformity of supplied hexagon socket set screws
- Test laboratories and regulatory bodies referencing standardized dimensions, tolerances and marking

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)

Technical Committee CEN/TC 185, Fasteners, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation
between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 4027:2003), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— M30 has been added for steel hexagon socket set screws;
— the tolerances of d have been modified to 3 classes according to the values of d ;
t t,max
— approximate masses have been deleted in Table with lengths (Table 2);
— non-ferrous metal screws have been deleted (as a consequence of the withdrawal of ISO 8839);
— for stainless steel fasteners, “Plain” has been changed to “Clean and bright”, and “Passivated” has been
added in Table 3;
— specifications for marking and labelling have been added as Clause 6.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
