Overview - EN 54-13:2017/FprA1 (CEN)
EN 54-13:2017 (draft amendment prA1) is a CEN standard that defines the requirements and methods for compatibility and connectability assessment of components used in fire detection and fire alarm systems (FDAS) and voice alarm subsystems. The standard applies where components comply with EN 54 parts or with a manufacturer’s specification when no EN 54 part exists. EN 54-13 focuses on assessing the transmission path between components (wired, optical fibre, radio frequency or combinations) and on the integrity of FDAS when connected to other systems. It does not prescribe system design, installation or use.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of assessment
- Compatibility and connectability of FDAS components and components that connect to FDAS.
- Transmission path requirements between components; distributed-function transmission is covered by the relevant EN 54 part, not by EN 54-13.
- Assessment methods and tests
- Prescribes methods to achieve an acceptable degree of confidence within pre-determined operational and environmental conditions.
- Acknowledges impracticality of testing every possible configuration - defines representative configurations for testing.
- Documentation and evidence
- Applicant-provided documentation must allow assessment of defined configuration(s).
- Includes requirements for software design documentation and accessibility for inspection while protecting confidentiality.
- Configuration for testing
- Requirements for field-level configuration to be provided and used for testing based on documentation review.
- Interconnection technologies
- Applicable to interconnections by electrical wires, optical fibre, RF links or combinations; other interconnection technologies may use the standard for guidance.
- System integrity
- Specifies requirements to verify integrity when the FDAS is connected to other systems.
- Amendment prA1 highlights
- Terminology change (e.g., “applicant”), updates to documentation requirements, software documentation detail and an informative annex describing the significance of changes from previous editions.
Applications - who uses EN 54-13
- Manufacturers preparing product documentation and demonstrating compatibility/connectability with other FDAS components.
- Testing laboratories and certification bodies conducting compatibility/connectability assessments and issuing conformity evidence.
- System integrators, specifiers and installers who need to verify that selected components will interoperate reliably.
- Building owners and safety managers evaluating system integrity when FDAS is connected to other building systems.
Related standards
- Other parts of the EN 54 series (each EN 54 part covers specific components or distributed-function requirements). EN 54-13 should be used alongside the relevant EN 54 parts for full compliance assessment.
For implementation or certification, consult the full EN 54-13:2017/prA1 document and the related EN 54 parts applicable to your components.
