Overview
CEN/TS 17767:2022 specifies a laboratory procedure for the extraction of phosphorus from organo-mineral fertilizers using 2 % formic acid (20 g/L). The extraction quantifies the fraction of phosphorus that is soluble in formic acid and therefore represents the amount associated with soft natural phosphates. This CEN Technical Specification is intended for provisional application across CEN member countries and supports consistent testing and classification of phosphorus in organo‑mineral fertilizers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and principle
- Targets organo‑mineral fertilizers; distinguishes phosphorus from soft versus hard natural phosphates by solubility in formic acid.
- Reagents
- 2 % formic acid (20 g/L): prepare by making up 82 mL concentrated formic acid (98–100 %, ρ ≈ 1.22 g/mL) to 5 L with distilled or demineralized water.
- Use distilled or demineralized water throughout.
- Sample and apparatus
- Weigh 5 g test portion to nearest 0.001 g into a 500 mL wide‑neck graduated flask (e.g., Stohmann).
- Use common laboratory glassware, a rotary shaker (35–40 turns/min), and a dry pleated filter free from phosphates.
- Extraction procedure
- Add formic acid at (20 ± 1) °C to ~1 cm below the graduation mark while rotating the flask, make up to volume, close and shake 30 minutes at (20 ± 2) °C.
- Filter, discard the first portion of filtrate, collect sufficient filtrate for analysis.
- Extracts may be stored at (4 ± 2) °C for up to two days before determination.
- Analysis
- Phosphorus concentration after extraction is determined according to CEN/TS 17774 (ICP‑AES after extraction).
- Sampling guidance
- Sampling should follow EN 1482 principles with adaptations for organic and organo‑mineral fertilizers.
Applications and users
This method is practical for:
- Quality control laboratories in fertilizer production verifying P availability fractions.
- Fertilizer manufacturers classifying products and ensuring compliance with declaration requirements.
- Regulatory bodies and certification schemes assessing the composition of organo‑mineral fertilizers.
- Research laboratories studying phosphorus speciation and bioavailability in fertilizer matrices.
