This document establishes methods for the identification and enumeration of relative proportions of diatom taxa on prepared slides and of data interpretation relevant to assessments of water quality in rivers and streams. It is suitable for use with indices and assessment methods based on the relative abundance of taxa. The methods for identification and enumeration can also be applied to the study of benthic diatoms in other habitats provided that data interpretation methods appropriate to these habitats are used.

Diese Europäische Norm legt Verfahren fest, die der taxonomischen Bestimmung und Zählung relativer Häufigkeiten von Diatomeen auf vorbereiteten Objektträgern sowie der für die Beurteilung der Gewässergüte von Fließgewässern maßgeblichen Dateninterpretation dienen. Sie ist geeignet für die Arbeiten mit Indizes und Schätzverfahren, die auf der relativen Häufigkeitsverteilung taxonomischer Einheiten beruhen. Die Verfahren zur taxonomischen Bestimmung und zahlenmäßigen Erfassung können auch für Untersuchungen in anderen Lebensräumen angewendet werden. Dabei werden den besonderen Gegebenheiten solcher Lebensräume entsprechende Datenbewertungsverfahren angewendet.

La présente Norme européenne établit des méthodes permettant d'identifier et de calculer les proportions relatives des taxons de diatomées sur des lames d'observation et d'interpréter les résultats dans le cadre d'évaluations de la qualité de l'eau des rivières et des fleuves. Elle peut être utilisée avec des indices et des méthodes d'évaluation fondés sur l'abondance relative des taxons. Ces méthodes d'identification et de dénombrement peuvent aussi être appliquées à l'étude des diatomées benthiques dans d'autres habitats sous réserve d'utiliser des méthodes d'interprétation des résultats appropriées aux habitats considérés.
