Overview
EN 6059-601:2014 specifies a test method to assess the behaviour of protection sleeves and conduits used with aerospace electrical cables when subjected to repeated open-and-close manipulation during installation, rework and repairs. Intended as part of the Aerospace series of test methods, this Part 601 is to be used together with EN 6059-100 (General) and focuses on mechanical handling that verifies sleeve integrity and memory form after repeated use.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Tests the behaviour of protection sleeves/conduits during insertion and removal operations typical of installation and maintenance.
- Specimen preparation:
- Sleeve specimen length: 1.0 m placed horizontally.
- Wire harness: standard aerospace wires, 1.2 m length, diameter equal to the maximum allowable for the sleeve size.
- Test carried out at ambient temperature (typically ~20 °C).
- Test method (phased procedure):
- Performed on the smallest and a medium sleeve size defined by the product specification.
- Use the manufacturer’s installation tooling to:
- Insert tooling into the sleeve.
- Install the sleeve onto the wire bundle with the tooling.
- Remove the tooling from the sleeve end.
- Remove the sleeve from the wire bundle by pulling the sleeve.
- Repeat insertion/removal cycles X times (X is defined in the applicable product standard).
- Acceptance criteria (visual inspection):
- No visible damage, no broken wires or filaments on the sleeve.
- No degradation of any protective inner layer (e.g., PTFE tape).
- Memory form verification: the maximum-diameter tracer indicator must not be visible after cycling, confirming sleeve recovery.
Applications and users
- Practical for aerospace OEMs, cable and harness manufacturers, suppliers of protection sleeves and conduits, MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) facilities, and independent test laboratories.
- Used to validate product design, production quality control, qualification for installation tooling, and maintenance procedures to ensure sleeves maintain protective function after repeated manipulations.
- Helps reduce in-service failures from sleeve abrasion, internal layer damage or loss of shape-memory that could expose wiring to abrasion, chafing or environmental risks.
