Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, Manganese-Titanium for Glass or Diffused Metallic Coatings
ABSTRACT
This specification covers standard requirements for titanium-bearing carbon steel plates intended for welded glass lined pressure vessels or other applications where the presence of free-iron carbide would be deleterious to the coating. The steel shall be killed and thermally treated to produce the required grain refinement specification. Heat and product analyses shall be performed wherein the material shall conform to the required chemical composition for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, copper, and titanium. The steel plate shall conform to tensile requirements such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification2 covers titanium-bearing carbon steel plates intended for welded glass lined pressure vessels or other applications where the presence of free-iron carbide would be deleterious to the coating. A minimum specific ratio of titanium to carbon is specified.
1.2 The maximum thickness of plates is limited to 2 in. [50 mm].
1.3 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM A562/A562M-10(2021) is a recognized international standard published by ASTM International, detailing the requirements for titanium-bearing carbon steel plates. These plates are primarily intended for use in welded glass-lined pressure vessels and other specialized equipment where glass or diffused metallic coatings are applied. The specification aims to prevent the detrimental effects of free-iron carbide on coating performance, ensuring enhanced corrosion resistance and structural integrity.
Compliant material is produced using killed steelmaking practices and must undergo suitable thermal treatments for required grain refinement. This ensures both the mechanical and chemical properties needed for demanding pressure applications are consistently achieved.
Key Topics
- Material Composition: The standard sets strict limits on key elements, such as carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, copper, and a titanium-to-carbon ratio. This precise chemical balance is essential for optimizing compatibility with glass or metallic coatings.
- Mechanical Properties: Required properties include:
- Tensile strength: 55–75 ksi [380–515 MPa]
- Minimum yield strength: 30 ksi [205 MPa]
- Elongation: Minimum 22% in 8 in. [200 mm] or 26% in 2 in. [50 mm]
- Thickness Limitation: Steel plates covered by this specification are limited to a maximum of 2 in. (50 mm) in thickness, ensuring suitability for most pressure vessel construction needs.
- Thermal Treatment: Plates are subject to normalizing or hot forming at a minimum of 1600°F [870°C] for sufficient time, producing the desired grain refinement for enhanced performance.
- Supplementary Requirements: Optional features such as vacuum treatment, ultrasonic or magnetic particle examination, additional tension tests, and impact tests can be specified as needed to meet project or purchaser requirements.
Applications
ASTM A562/A562M-10(2021) is widely used in industries where glass-lined pressure vessels are essential, such as:
- Chemical Processing: Glass or metallic coatings protect vessels from aggressive chemicals. Using titanium-bearing carbon steel helps maintain coating integrity by minimizing free-iron carbide formation.
- Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Cleanability and corrosion resistance are critical for vessel linings in drug production.
- Food and Beverage Industry: Glass-lined tanks ensure purity and hygiene in storage and processing operations.
- Industrial Storage: Tanks used for corrosive or high-purity substances benefit from the controlled properties specified by this standard.
By meeting the stringent requirements of ASTM A562/A562M, manufacturers and engineers can ensure their glass-lined pressure vessels operate safely and efficiently, with minimized risk of coating failure or contamination.
Related Standards
Several other ASTM standards are referenced within ASTM A562/A562M-10(2021), providing additional guidance on steel plates and examination methods:
- ASTM A20/A20M: General requirements for steel plates used in pressure vessels. Provides overarching guidelines for testing, repair, marking, and quality.
- ASTM A435/A435M: Methods for straight-beam ultrasonic examination of steel plates.
- ASTM A577/A577M: Standards for ultrasonic angle-beam examination.
- ASTM A578/A578M: Requirements for straight-beam ultrasonic examination in special applications.
For users requiring compliance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, reference is made to Specification SA-562/SA-562M in Section II of that code.
ASTM A562/A562M-10(2021) ensures reliable performance in demanding glass-lined and coated vessel applications, supporting safety, durability, and regulatory compliance across global industries.
