Standard Specification for Gypsum Casting Plaster and Gypsum Molding Plaster

ABSTRACT
This specification covers casting and molding plaster materials consisting essentially of calcined gypsum. The chemical composition of each plaster material should meet the required purity value. For samples, equal amounts of material should be taken from the outer and center of each package. Specimens shall also be tested for setting time, compressive strength and fineness.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers gypsum casting plaster and gypsum molding plaster materials consisting essentially of calcined gypsum.
1.2 The values stated in either inch-pound or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.
1.3 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes shall not be considered as requirements of the standard.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM C59/C59M-00(2020) sets the requirements for gypsum casting plaster and gypsum molding plaster. Issued by ASTM International, this standard specification applies to materials consisting primarily of calcined gypsum. It details the necessary chemical purity, physical properties, sampling procedures, testing, packaging, inspection, and certification requirements for these plasters. This standard ensures quality and consistency in products used for casting and molding applications, serving manufacturers, suppliers, and end-users across a range of industries.

Key Topics

  • Material Composition: Specifies that gypsum casting plaster and molding plaster must consist essentially of calcined gypsum with at least 85% CaSO₄·2H₂O purity.
  • Physical Properties: Establishes criteria for setting time (10 to 50 minutes), minimum compressive strength (1800 psi or 12.4 MPa), and fineness (all passing a No. 30 [600 µm] sieve, and at least 90% passing a No. 100 [150 µm] sieve).
  • Sampling and Testing: Requires random sampling from not less than 1% of packages (but not fewer than five), with material taken from both the outer and center sections of each package. Composite samples are tested for compliance.
  • Packaging and Marking: Products must be dry and free of lumps, shipped in properly marked packages indicating the manufacturer, brand, description, and net weight.
  • Inspection and Certification: Inspection arrangements and the need for a certificate of compliance must be specified in the purchase agreement.
  • Rejection Procedures: Provides processes for rejection if the material fails to meet the specified requirements.

Applications

Gypsum casting plaster and gypsum molding plaster are widely used in multiple sectors:

  • Architectural Details: Forming decorative elements such as cornices, moldings, and ceiling medallions.
  • Art and Craft: Creating sculptures, art ware, lamp bases, and ornamental items.
  • Manufacturing: Producing precision molds for ceramics, pottery, and prototyping.
  • Restoration: Repairing and reproducing historical plaster features in buildings.
  • Medical Use: Crafting orthopedic casts and molds in some applications.

By adhering to ASTM C59/C59M-00(2020), manufacturers and end-users ensure that gypsum plasters meet recognized standards for quality, consistency, and performance, reducing risk and enhancing results in casting and molding processes.
