Standard Test Method for Sampling and Testing Structural Cementitious Panels
ABSTRACT
These test methods cover sampling and testing of structural cementitious panels. The panels are non-combustible, water durable, fiber reinforced inorganic composite panels intended for use as structural panels when fastened to supports spaced. Water absorption, density, moment capacity, and bending stiffness test methods shall be performed to conform to the specified requirements.
SCOPE
1.1 These test methods cover sampling and testing of structural cementitious panels. Structural cementitious panels are non-combustible, water durable, fiber reinforced inorganic composite panels intended for use as structural panels when fastened to supports spaced in accordance with the span rating in inches.
1.2 These test methods are utilized in evaluating products cited in Specification C1705/C1705M.
1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM C1704/C1704M-09a(2023), developed by ASTM International, defines the standard test methods for sampling and testing structural cementitious panels. These panels are non-combustible, water durable, fiber reinforced inorganic composite panels that serve as structural elements when attached to supports within specified spacing. The standard describes essential test procedures to determine critical performance characteristics, ensuring structural reliability, quality, and compliance with industry best practices. It supports the evaluation and quality assurance of products cited in Specification C1705/C1705M.
Key Topics
ASTM C1704/C1704M-09a(2023) addresses the following core test methods and related concepts:
- Sampling and Inspection: Specifies minimum requirements for sample selection and test specimen preparation to enable statistical analysis of structural cementitious panels.
- Water Absorption Testing: Measures water absorption as an indicator of durability and consistency across product batches. Test specimens are submerged and evaluated under controlled conditions.
- Density Evaluation: Determines the relative density of panels, assisting in product uniformity and comparative assessments.
- Moment Capacity Testing: Evaluates the panel's ability to resist bending moments, calculated using standardized procedures for specimen preparation, conditioning (dry/wet), and mechanical testing.
- Bending Stiffness Measurement: Assesses stiffness under load, a primary characteristic linked to structural performance and suitability for load-bearing applications.
- Terminology and Definitions: Provides precise technical definitions related to panel orientation (machine direction, cross-machine direction), span rating, and other essential terms for consistent application.
- Precision and Bias: Addresses statistical accuracy and ongoing determination of test method reliability.
- Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Stresses the user's responsibility to apply appropriate health and safety practices and consider regulatory limitations prior to use.
- International Standardization: Developed in accordance with WTO TBT Committee principles, ensuring global recognition and applicability.
Applications
Structural cementitious panels evaluated under ASTM C1704/C1704M are commonly used in:
- Structural Wall and Floor Systems: Panels tested per this standard are valued for their non-combustibility, water durability, and fiber-reinforced construction, making them suitable for use in walls, floors, and roofs in commercial and residential construction.
- Quality Assurance Programs: Manufacturers rely on this standard for ongoing statistical quality control during production, ensuring products meet performance standards for strength and durability.
- Third-Party Certification and Product Qualification: The test methods are critical in product evaluation for certification and qualification policies referenced by industry authorities and building codes.
- Design and Specification: Architects and engineers reference this standard to select appropriate panel products that satisfy project requirements for structural support, fire resistance, and insulation.
- Regulatory Compliance and Inspection: The standard assists inspectors and building officials in verifying that installed panels conform to code-mandated structural and safety requirements.
