Overview
ASTM C22/C22M-00(2021) - Standard Specification for Gypsum is an internationally recognized standard issued by ASTM International. It provides comprehensive requirements for gypsum, specifically calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO₄·2H₂O), in its crystalline form. This standard sets out the specifications for both the chemical composition and the physical properties of gypsum, ensuring material quality and consistency for industrial and construction applications. ASTM C22/C22M can be used in both inch-pound and SI (metric) measurements, further supporting global applicability and compliance.
Key Topics
Material Requirements
- Covers gypsum containing not less than 70% calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO₄·2H₂O) by weight.
- Specifies the crystalline form and the need for compliance with chemical composition limits.
Physical Properties
- Details procedures for crushing, grinding, or sizing gypsum to meet order specifications.
- Requires thorough sampling methods for both bulk and packaged shipments to ensure product uniformity.
- Laboratory sample preparation and handling must maintain material integrity for testing.
Testing Methods
- Chemical and physical analyses must follow ASTM C471M and ASTM C472, respectively.
- Ensures that all tests are conducted according to established ASTM testing procedures.
Inspection and Certification
- Inspection procedures are determined by mutual agreement between supplier and purchaser.
- Provides for manufacturer’s certification, certifying compliance upon request.
- Gypsum failing to meet requirements is to be rejected and documented in writing.
Packaging and Marking
- Gypsum may be shipped in bulk or packaged form.
- Packages must be labeled with required information: manufacturer name, material description, and weight.
- For bulk shipments, this information must accompany the delivery visibly.
Applications
ASTM C22/C22M-00(2021) plays a crucial role in sectors where quality-controlled gypsum is essential:
Construction and Building Materials
- Used as a core material for wallboard, plaster, and drywall systems.
- Ensures consistency and safety in construction applications by verifying material purity and composition.
Industrial and Manufacturing
- Applied in the production of gypsum plasters and cements.
- Important for industries producing prefabricated building components or specialized gypsum products.
Quality Assurance and Procurement
- Provides a benchmark for purchasing specifications, facilitating transparent transactions between suppliers and buyers.
- Supports regulatory compliance in markets requiring evidence of material standards.
Related Standards
The ASTM C22/C22M-00(2021) specification refers to and aligns with several other ASTM standards, ensuring an integrated approach to quality and testing:
