Although major part of the information needed by the driver will be directly displayed to him on-board by the DMI, some indications will have to be given by signs or plates to be installed along the track, e.g.; for the ETCS level 2 retro-reflecting signs will be necessary to show the precise location of the limit between track-circuits to the driver. Such signs and plates should be standardized throughout Europe for interoperability and this need is similar to the need explicitly recognized to harmonize the display information through the DMI.
