CEN/TC 150/WG 5 - Pedestrian propelled trucks
Pedestrian propelled trucks
General Information
This document specifies requirements for the types of industrial trucks specified in the scope of EN ISO 3691-5:2015.
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with EN ISO 3691-5:2015.
This document deals with the following significant hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events relevant to pedestrian-propelled trucks, when used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer:
- protection against crushing, shearing and trapping;
- electrical requirements;
- electromagnetic immunity.
These requirements are supplementary to those stated in EN ISO 3691-5:2015 with the addition of requirements for the following hazard:
- electromagnetic immunity (external radiation).
This document partially replaces the following requirement of EN ISO 3691-5:2015:
- electrical requirements.
This document specifies supplementary requirements to EN ISO 3691-5:2015:
- protection against crushing, shearing and trapping;
- information for use (instruction handbook and marking).
This document does not specify supplementary requirements to EN ISO 3691-5:2015:
- static electricity;
- radiation;
- general principles for the drafting of instructions;
- sales literature.
Annex A (informative) contains the list of significant hazards covered by this document.

This document applies to pedestrian propelled industrial platform trucks as defined in 3.1 with a rated capacity up to and including 500 kg, hereinafter referred to as “trucks” and designed for general purposes.
This document does not apply to:
— shopping trolleys referred to in EN 1929, Parts 1 to 4 and 7 (CEN/TC 291);
— roll containers referred to in EN 12674, Parts 1 to 4 (CEN/TC 261);
— trucks that are intended to be towed by powered vehicles, e.g. milk-run-trains/trailer trains/tugger trains.
This document deals with the technical requirements to minimize the hazards listed in Annex C which can arise during commissioning, operation and maintenance of trucks when carried out in accordance with the specifications as intended by the manufacturer.
This document does not specify the additional requirements for:
— operation in severe conditions (e.g. extreme environmental conditions such as: freezer applications, high temperatures, corrosive environment);
— operation subject to special rules (e.g. potentially explosive atmospheres);
— handling of loads the nature of which could lead to dangerous situations (e.g. molten metal, acids/alkalis, radiating materials, especially brittle loads);
— hazards occurring during construction, transportation, decommissioning and disposal;
— direct contact with foodstuffs;
— operation on gradients or on surfaces other than smooth, level, hard surfaces;
— trucks designed for special applications (e.g., trucks used in hospitals as dinner trollies);
— trucks fitted with hinged or sliding doors.
Other possible limitations of the scope of other standards referred to that also apply to this document.
Hazards relating to noise, vibration, visibility and static electricity are not dealt with in this document.
This document applies to trucks manufactured after the date of issue.

1.1 This standard covers pedestrian propelled platform trucks with a rated capacity up to 1000 kg, here after referred to as "trucks". Special applications case for rated capacities above 1000 kg. Trucks for these capacities may warrant requirements additional to those laid down in this standard. 1.2 For the purposes of this standard a manual industrial platform truck is a truck with at least 3 wheels and fitted with a non-lifting load-carrying platform and, should such be the case with one or several shelves.

1.1 This standard applies to pedestrian propelled pallet trucks with lift heights above 300 mm and up to 1,000 mm and rated capacities up to 1,000 kg hereinafter referred to as "trucks". Special applications call for rated capacities above 1,000 kg. Scissor lift pallet trucks for these capacities may warrant requirements additional to those laid down in the present standard.

This standard applies to manually propelled straddle, pallet and platform stacker trucks with capacities not exceeding 1000 kg. For the purposes of this standard a manually propelled stacker truck (hereinafter referred to as a "truck") is a masted truck, equipped with forks, a platform, or other load handling device. The truck shall be designed to be manually pushed or pulled on a substantially horizontal hard surface by one pedestrian operator. The load maybe raised by either manual means or electrical battery power.
