CEN/TC 261/SC 5/WG 24 - Drums (e.g. metal, plastic or fibreboard)
Elaboration of standards for drums used for transport, storage and distribution of liquid and solid products including dangerous and non-dangerous goods. Standards are covering the following aspects: a) Dimensions of containers; volume, shape b) Dimensions of closures; shape, thread, for TH drums, closing mechanism for OH drums, c) Marking, reuse, remanufacture and recyclability, d) Performace requirements and test procedures. Drums (industrial packaging) are defined as: a) Metal drums (of cylindrical on conical form) of minimal wall thickness of 0.5mm and in the capacity range of 20-250ltr. with non-removable and removable head style, b) Rigid plastic drums in the range of 20-250 ltr. with non-removable head style, c) Fibre drums of capacity 15-250 ltr. d) Composite drums of capacity 15-250 ltr. manufactured from metal, fibre and plastic material.

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is a public standards organization that brings together the national standardization bodies of 34 European countries. CEN provides a platform for developing European Standards (ENs) and other technical documents in relation to various products, materials, services, and processes, supporting the European Single Market.
A Subcommittee (SC) in CEN operates under a Technical Committee and focuses on a specific subset of the TC's scope. Subcommittees develop standards and technical specifications in their specialized area, reporting to their parent Technical Committee. They may also have working groups for detailed technical work.
