Frequently Asked Questions
CEN/TC 297/WG 4 is a Working Group within the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It is named "Linings" and is responsible for: Preparation of specifications on liners for free-standing chimneys. This committee has published 5 standards.
CEN/TC 297/WG 4 develops CEN standards. The scope of work includes: Preparation of specifications on liners for free-standing chimneys. Currently, there are 5 published standards from this working group.
The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is a public standards organization that brings together the national standardization bodies of 34 European countries. CEN provides a platform for developing European Standards (ENs) and other technical documents in relation to various products, materials, services, and processes, supporting the European Single Market.
A Working Group in CEN is a specialized group responsible for developing standards or technical work within a defined scope. These bodies bring together international experts to create consensus-based standards that support global trade, safety, and interoperability.
This European Standard specifies performance requirements and test methods for clay/ceramic bricks and factory made mortars used for the construction of brick liners in free-standing industrial chimneys. The structural design of the brick liners is specified in EN 13084-4.
The marking requirement for bricks and mortar covered by this European Standard is included. This European Standard provides for the evaluation of conformity of material for brick liners to this European Standard.

This European Standard specifies special requirements and performance criteria for the design and construction of lining systems made of brickwork for free-standing industrial chimneys. Current European practice favours sectional liners and the statements of the standard are mainly devoted to such solutions but are also largely applicable to base supported independent and stayed liners. The differences in the design and construction of the two last types are covered by Annex A. This European Standard identifies requirements to ensure mechanical resistance and stability of liners in accordance with the general requirements given in EN 13084-1.
Lining systems comprise some or all of the following:
chimney liner including duct entry;
insulation;
liner support;
space between liner and concrete windshield.
Gas flow calculations to determine liner sizes are covered by EN 13084-1.
