Overview

EN 61300-3-26:2002 (CLC adoption of IEC 61300-3-26:2002) defines a standardized procedure for measuring the angular misalignment between the fibre and ferrule axes in cylindrical ferrules used for singlemode fibre optic connectors with fibre installed. The method quantifies the angle δ between the ferrule axis and the installed fibre axis by observing far‑field spot deviation as the ferrule is rotated. The standard describes required apparatus, measurement steps, data processing and corrections for endface geometry.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Measurement of angular misalignment in cylindrical ferrules for singlemode connectors (fibre installed).
  • Apparatus:
    • Precise ferrule holder (V‑groove or centring mechanism; ISO 2538 recommended V‑groove angle)
    • White light source
    • Screen or camera (CCD) perpendicular to the holder axis
    • Computer and image‑analysis software for spot centroiding and fitting
  • Measurement procedure:
    • Mark dome‑vertex → fibre‑core direction on the ferrule.
    • Rotate ferrule in steps (≤ 90° recommended) and capture spot images.
    • Fit centres of spot images to a circle; compute radius r of that circle.
    • Compute spot deviation angle θ using θ = arctan(r / L), where L is distance from ferrule surface to screen.
  • Corrections and geometry:
    • Measure ferrule endface radius of curvature R and apex offset (eccentricity) e prior to angular measurement.
    • Correct for deflection caused by polished dome tilt using relationships derived from Snell’s law (Annex A).
    • Components of misalignment (θx, θy and δx, δy) are evaluated in an orthogonal axis system referenced to the dome vertex marker.
  • Accuracy notes:
    • Typical connector misalignments are in tenths of a degree. Example: 0.5° produces ~45 µm spot shift at 5 mm distance.
    • To achieve ~0.01° accuracy in θ, r should be known to ~1 µm and L to ~0.1 mm.

Applications and who uses it

  • Connector and ferrule manufacturers for production QA and endface alignment verification.
  • Optical test laboratories performing acceptance testing and certification of singlemode connectors.
  • Quality and R&D engineers working on connector design, endface polishing processes and assembly automation.
  • Telecom and datacom suppliers validating connector mechanical integrity that affects optical performance (insertion loss, return loss).
  • Benefits: consistent, reproducible angular misalignment data for process control, supplier qualification and failure analysis.

Related standards

  • EN/IEC 61300 series (basic test and measurement procedures) - see Part 1 (general guidance) and related Parts (e.g., 3‑15, 3‑16 as harmonized standards).
  • ISO 2538 - referenced for geometrical product specifications (angles and slopes on prisms / V‑groove guidance).

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shal
