SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of ETS 300 074 Edition 1, based on CEPT Recommendation T/TE 06-03 (Edinburgh 1988) and published by SIST. It specifies the Videotex presentation layer data syntax for Transparent Data, so implementers know how to carry data in certain Videotex applications without the usual presentation-level control codes interrupting it.
It is mainly relevant when a Videotex system needs to move large blocks of display data efficiently, such as geometric or photographic content. In practice, it tells designers and terminal implementers how to enter transparent mode, how to leave it, and how to protect special control bytes inside the data stream.
What does SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 specify?
SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 describes the Transparent Data mode that can be used within certain Videotex applications. The document is short and focused: it gives the context, the related references and definitions, and the protocol rules for switching into and out of transparent transfer.
The document is organized into a foreword, introduction, references, definitions, protocol, and history. The foreword also places it in an ETSI package of Videotex standards and notes which related document should be used for the references and definitions sections.
What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003?
SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 defines how transparent transfer works at the presentation layer. The key point is that all presentation-level code bits are used as data bits, which improves efficiency when the payload is large.
- Transparent mode uses all code bits as data. The introduction says the mode can carry 7 or 8 bits per byte as actual data, with no interruption by normal presentation-level control codes. That matters because the data stream can carry bigger displays more efficiently.
- The "TRANSPARENT data" VPCE starts the mode. Clause 4 says this VPCE is used to enter transparent mode. Implementers need to recognize that control element as the start of a transparent block.
- There are two ways to leave transparent mode. Clause 4 allows exit either after a byte count or when a new VPCE is detected. This gives systems a normal end-of-block path and a forced resynchronization path.
- The first N value controls the exit method. If N is zero, transparent mode ends only when a new VPCE starts. If N is between 1 and 254 inclusive, N sets the number of bytes to receive before returning to the previous VPDE, while still allowing a new VPCE to end the mode early.
- Byte counting is done after stuffing is removed. The protocol counts received bytes only after stuffed bytes have been stripped out. That means implementers must count the effective payload, not the raw on-the-wire sequence.
- US (01 15) must be stuffed inside data. When the US code appears naturally in transparent data, it is transmitted twice. This prevents a normal data byte from being mistaken for the start of a new VPCE.
- A single US marks a new VPCE. Clause 4 says a single US in the stream is detected as a new VPCE. Immediate exit on that event supports the “RESET to service break to row X” behavior noted in the text.
What terms does SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 define?
SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 uses a small set of protocol terms that are important for implementation.
- Transparent mode - the presentation-layer mode in which code bits are treated as user data instead of control codes.
- TRANSPARENT data VPCE - the VPCE used to enter transparent mode.
- US (01 15) code - the code that signals the start of a new VPCE when it appears as a single byte.
- Byte stuffing - the technique of sending US twice when it appears naturally in data so it is not misread as control.
- N - the first value in the transparent-mode data that selects whether exit is by byte count or only by a new VPCE.
- VPDE - the previous presentation data element that the protocol returns to after the byte count is reached.
Who uses SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003?
SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 is used by Videotex system designers, terminal equipment engineers, and standards specialists working on presentation-layer behavior. It is especially relevant where a Videotex application carries geometric or photographic display data and needs a transparent transfer path.
It also matters for testing and integration of Videotex terminals, because the parser must handle byte stuffing, count-based exit, and immediate exit on a new VPCE correctly.
What changed in SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 from the previous edition?
SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 is stated to be identical to ETS 300 074 Edition 1. The foreword says the CEPT Recommendation T/TE 06-03 (Edinburgh 1988) was approved by ETSI as an ETS without any modification.
Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003?
SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 refers to a small set of related standards and recommendations that place it in the Videotex family.
| Standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| CEPT Recommendation T TE 06-01 E | Cited in the references, and also named in the definitions section for the source definitions. |
| ETS 300 072 | The foreword says items 2.0 References and 3.0 Definitions are to be replaced by this standard. |
| ETS 300 073 | Part of the integrated package of Videotex ETSs; covers Videotex presentation layer data syntax for geometric display. |
| ETS 300 075 | Part of the integrated package; covers Videotex processable data. |
| ETS 300 076 | Part of the integrated package; covers Videotex Terminal Facility Identifier (TFI). |
What does the SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 document contain?
SIST ETS 300 074 E1:2003 contains a brief foreword, an introduction explaining why transparent transfer is useful, a references section, a definitions section, and a protocol clause. The protocol clause includes the rules for entering transparent mode, counting bytes, leaving the mode, and handling US stuffing.
The document also includes a switching illustration that shows the transparent-mode state changes and the effect of N values. In practice, that diagram helps implementers and testers verify parser behavior and mode transitions.
