Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures -- Part 3-27: Examinations and measurements - Measurement method for the hole location of a multiway connector plug
IEC 61300-3-27:1997 is to measure the hole location of a multiway connector plug which has multiple fibre holes for arraying fibres and two guide holes for positioning two alignment pins. The following dimensions on the endface of the plug shall be accurately measured to satisfy the specified mechanical and optical performance of the connector:
– distance between two guide-hole centres L;
– position deviation of each fibre-hole centre Pi.

– distance entre les centres des deux trous de visée L;
– écart de position de chaque centre du trou de fibre Pi.

Overview
EN 61300-3-27:1997 (IEC 61300-3-27:1997) specifies a measurement method for the hole location of a multiway connector plug used in fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. The standard defines how to measure two critical endface dimensions that affect mechanical and optical performance: the distance between guide‑hole centres (L) and the position deviation of each fibre‑hole centre (Pi). Measurements are performed non‑contact using image‑processing techniques to ensure accurate array alignment and mating performance.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and objectives
- Measure guide‑hole spacing (L) and individual fibre‑hole position deviations (Pi) on multiway connector plugs.
- Definitions
- L = distance between centres of the two alignment guide holes.
- Pi = deviation of an actual fibre‑hole centre from its intended (design) position.
- Measurement principle
- Non‑contact imaging (microscope with CCD) and image processing to locate hole circumferences, fit circles, and compute centres.
- Centre coordinates used to calculate L (Euclidean distance between guide‑hole centres) and Pi (distance between measured fibre‑hole centre and intended design point).
- Apparatus
- Microscope with CCD camera, image processing unit, monitor, diffuse light source, translation stage with stage‑drive, distance‑measuring unit, and CPU.
- Procedure highlights
- Mount plug with guide‑hole axis perpendicular to the stage plane.
- Capture more than three points around each hole circumference, fit a circle to derive centre coordinates, and compute L and Pi.
- Ensure equipment stabilisation and proper illumination before measurement.
- Specification items
- The detail specification should state video resolution, distance measurement resolution, ambient temperature, and allowable tolerances for L and Pi.
Applications and users
- Primary uses
- Quality control and production inspection of multiway fibre optic connectors.
- Incoming inspection, acceptance testing, and manufacturing process control to verify mechanical tolerances that affect optical alignment.
- Design verification and R&D during connector development.
- Who benefits
- Connector manufacturers, contract test laboratories, optical assembly shops, and compliance engineers who must ensure connector mating accuracy and array alignment.
- Practical value
- Ensures reliable connector mating, low insertion loss and return loss by confirming precise hole geometry and alignment-pin positioning.
