Overview
EN 60335-2-65:2003 - adopted by CLC from IEC 60335-2-65:2002 - is the European safety standard that defines particular requirements for electric air‑cleaning appliances for household and similar use. It applies to appliances with rated voltages up to 250 V single‑phase and 480 V for other appliances, and covers units intended for use by laymen in homes, shops, light industry and on farms. This part is to be used together with EN 60335-1 (General requirements) and replaces the earlier EN 60335-2-65:1995 + A1:2001.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Defines which air‑cleaning appliances fall within the standard and voltage limits for household and similar appliances.
- Relationship to EN 60335-1: Supplements, modifies or replaces clauses of the general standard so that EN 60335-1 + EN 60335-2-65 together form the complete safety requirements for air‑cleaners.
- Safety risk coverage: Focuses on electrical safety risks; CENELEC investigation found Low Voltage Directive (LVD) covers all relevant risks. Mechanical risks from moving parts are considered but generally regarded as electrical in origin for these products.
- Structure and numbering: Additional subclauses, tables and figures specific to air‑cleaners are numbered from 101; additional annexes are lettered (AA, BB, etc.).
- Harmonization and conformity: Endorsed by CENELEC without modification; national adoption and withdrawal dates were specified to align EU members.
Note: EN 60335-2-65 defines requirements and test specifications by reference to EN 60335-1; detailed test procedures and acceptance criteria reside in those combined documents.
Practical applications
- Designing and certifying air purifiers, room air cleaners, filtration units and similar appliances for household and light‑commercial markets.
- Guiding product safety engineering, risk assessment and selection of protective measures during development.
- Serving as the technical basis for conformity assessment, CE marking and demonstrating compliance with the Low Voltage Directive for air‑cleaning equipment.
- Informing test laboratories on which additional clauses and annexes to apply when testing air‑cleaners.
Who should use this standard
- Manufacturers and product designers of air‑cleaning appliances
- Compliance and regulatory engineers handling CE marking and LVD conformity
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing safety testing
- Procurement and quality managers in retail, light industry and farm equipment sectors
