Overview

SIST EN 61119-6:1999 is a crucial international standard developed by the CLC that specifies the Serial Copy Management System (SCMS) for the Digital Audio Tape (DAT) cassette system used in consumer audio applications. This standard defines the technical requirements for recording and managing digital audio interface signals and digital output signals on DAT recorders. Its primary purpose is to control and prevent unauthorized serial copying of digital audio content, ensuring copyright protection while enabling practical recording functionality.

By setting guidelines on how copy protection bits and category codes are handled, EN 61119-6 provides a framework for manufacturers to design interoperable DAT recorders, thereby safeguarding intellectual property without hindering legitimate consumer use.

Key Topics

  • Digital Output Signals
EN 61119-6 mandates specific encoding of category codes and copyright status bits in the channel status bits of the digital output signal. These codes indicate the signal type (e.g., DAT source, digital broadcast, analogue/digital converter) and its copyright protection status ("protected" or "not protected").

  • Recording Functions and Copy Protection
The standard enforces rules on when recording is permitted or inhibited based on the digital input signal's copyright bits and category codes:

    • Recording is allowed when bits indicate non-protected status or recognized sources on a whitelist.
    • Recording is inhibited if signals indicate copyright protection without authorization.
    • Special provisions apply for signals from analog-to-digital converters that provide original source information.
  • Category Code Definitions These codes categorize the source of digital audio signals, including:

    • Laser-optical products (e.g., CD players)
    • Digital/digital converters and signal processors
    • Magnetic tape or disc-based products
    • Broadcast reception of digitally encoded audio
    • Audio instruments and original signals
  • Whitelist System
EN 61119-6 includes a whitelist of category codes where recording is permitted under specific conditions, preserving flexibility while maintaining control over unauthorized copying.

  • Continuous Monitoring
Devices must continuously monitor and respect the included category codes and copyright bits to ensure compliance.

Applications

  • Consumer Digital Audio Tape Recorders
Designed specifically for consumer DAT equipment, this standard provides manufacturers with detailed requirements to implement SCMS effectively, allowing consumers to record digital audio while respecting copyright laws.

  • Digital Audio Interfaces
EN 61119-6 guides the implementation of digital audio interfaces on DAT recorders, ensuring the correct encoding of status bits that facilitate copy management.

  • Content Protection in Audio Broadcasting
The principles of the standard can be applied to consumer devices involved in receiving and recording digitally broadcast audio signals, helping to enforce copyright protection in broadcasting environments.

  • Compatibility and Interoperability
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers ensure interoperability between recording devices and media, avoiding issues related to unauthorized copying and making consumer experiences seamless.

Related Standards

  • IEC 958: Digital Audio Interface (1989)
Defines digital audio interface formats, referenced by EN 61119-6 for channel status bit and subcode usage.

  • EN 61119-1:1992 – DAT Dimensions and Characteristics
Covers physical properties of DAT cassettes and recorders, providing complementary specifications necessary for full system compliance.

  • EN 61119-2:1991 – DAT Calibration Tape
Specifies calibration standards for DAT devices to maintain recording and playback quality.

  • EN 61119-3:1992 – DAT Tape Properties
Details tape properties for consistent media performance.

  • EN 61119-5: (In preparation) – DAT for Professional Use
Extends DAT specifications to professional environments, expanding the applicability of digital tape technologies.

Implementing the SIST EN 61119-6:1999 Serial Copy Management System standard is essential for ensuring secure, compliant digital audio recording on DAT devices, preserving intellectual property rights and enhancing consumer trust in digital audio technologies.
