Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-17: Tests - Cold (IEC 61300-2-17:2010)

IEC 61300-2-17:2010 details a procedure for determining the suitability of a fibre optic device to withstand environmental conditions of extended low temperature (cold), which may occur in use, storage and/or transport. This procedure does not assess the ability of a device to operate during temperature variations; in this case, IEC 61300-2-22 would be used. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are:  - Procedure and details to be specified were reconsidered;  - The deviation of the temperature in severity was changed ± 3 °C to ± 2 °C.

Optični spojni elementi in pasivne komponente - Postopki osnovnega preskušanja in merjenja - 2-17. del: Preskusi - Mraz (IEC 61300-2-17:2010)

Overview

EN 61300-2-17:2011 (identical to IEC 61300-2-17:2010) specifies a standardized cold test procedure for assessing the suitability of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components to withstand extended low‑temperature environments encountered in use, storage or transport. It defines how to condition a Device Under Test (DUT) in an environmental chamber, the timing and measurement sequence, and the severity levels for cold exposure. This part does not assess device performance during temperature cycling - IEC 61300-2-22 covers that.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Tests for extended low temperature (cold) exposure of fibre optic components.
  • Test basis: Conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-1, test Ab (environmental chamber cold test).
  • Temperature severity:
    • Exposure duration: 96 hours.
    • Allowed temperature deviation: ±2 °C (changed from ±3 °C in the previous edition).
    • Typical specified test temperatures: −40 °C, −25 °C, −10 °C (one to be specified in the relevant spec).
  • Temperature ramp: Rate of change must not exceed 1 °C/min, averaged over a maximum 5‑minute period, for both cooling and warming.
  • Preconditioning and recovery:
    • Precondition DUT under standard atmospheric conditions for minimum 2 hours.
    • After test, dry if necessary and allow 2 hours recovery at standard atmospheric conditions before final measurements.
  • Mounting and chamber considerations:
    • Use an environmental chamber capable of maintaining specified temperature and homogeneity; forced air circulation permitted.
    • Supports for DUT should have low thermal conductivity to thermally isolate the DUT unless otherwise specified.
    • If optical leads are present, include 1.5 m of cable per monitored port inside the chamber.
  • Measurements: Initial, optional periodic (if specified, up to once per hour), and final examinations/measurements; visual inspection per IEC 61300-3-1 where required.

Practical applications

  • Qualifying fibre optic connectors, adaptors, enclosures, pigtails and passive components for cold climates or cold‑chain logistics.
  • Verifying mechanical and optical integrity after prolonged low‑temperature exposure (loss, alignment, cracks, seals).
  • Supporting product design validation, environmental qualification, supplier acceptance and quality assurance.

Who should use this standard

  • Fibre optic component manufacturers and test laboratories
  • Design and reliability engineers for telecom, datacom, military, aerospace and outdoor industrial equipment
  • Quality assurance and procurement teams specifying environmental requirements in contracts and technical specifications
