Tests for mechanical and physical properties of aggregates - Part 4: Determination of the voids of dry compacted filler

This standard describes the reference method used for type testing and in cases of dispute, the determination of the voids of dry compacted filler by means of a Rigden apparatus. For other purposes, in particular factory production control, other methods may be used provided that an appropriate working relationship with the reference method has been established. The test is applicable to natural and manufactured fillers. It is used, for example to determine their bitumen carrying capacity.

Füllern in Asphalt.

Overview

SIST EN 1097-4:2008 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the reference method for determining the voids of dry compacted filler using a Rigden apparatus. This standardized test is critical for type testing and dispute resolution related to the mechanical and physical properties of aggregates, specifically fillers used in construction materials. The measurement of voids is integral for assessing the bitumen carrying capacity of fillers, which directly impacts the quality and durability of bituminous mixtures in road construction and other infrastructure projects. Although this standard focuses on a reference method, alternative methods may be employed for factory production control once validated against EN 1097-4.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
The procedure applies to both natural and manufactured fillers mainly passing a 0.063 mm sieve size. It is designed primarily for type testing and dispute resolution but can guide production control methods.

  • Test Principle
The filler material is compacted using a standard compaction apparatus (Rigden apparatus). The volume of the compacted filler is calculated by measuring the height of the compacted bed and using the known particle density to compute air void content.

  • Apparatus Specifications
Includes a hardened steel compaction apparatus with a dropping block and plunger, ventilated drying oven, vernier depth calliper or dial gauge, balance, and test sieves. The detailed dimensions and masses of apparatus components ensure test reproducibility and precision.

  • Test Procedure
The process involves drying the filler to a constant mass, reducing the sample size, compacting the filler under controlled impacts (100 drops), and measuring the height of the compacted filler bed. Tests are conducted in triplicate for reliability.

  • Calculation of Voids
The voids percentage is computed from the mass, height, particle density, and geometry of the compacted sample using a defined formula. Results are averaged from three specimens and rounded to 1%.

  • Precision and Reporting
Repeatability and reproducibility rates are approximately 4.5% and 5%, respectively. The test report must include reference to the standard, voids result, apparatus configuration, fillers’ details, and test date.

Applications

  • Bitumen Mixture Design
The voids content of dry compacted fillers is a key parameter influencing bitumen absorption and performance in bituminous mixtures used for road surfacing and pavement layers.

  • Quality Control in Aggregate Production
Aggregate manufacturers and suppliers use this standardized test to ensure filler materials meet specific physical property requirements, helping to maintain consistent product performance.

  • Type Testing and Dispute Resolution
SIST EN 1097-4:2008 serves as the authoritative method for resolving disagreements related to filler quality and behavior, thereby ensuring compliance with technical specifications.

  • Research and Development
Laboratories investigating new filler materials utilize this test to characterize and compare void structures, aiding in the development of optimized construction materials.
