SIST EN 301 064-1 V1.1.2:2003 is the Slovenian standard identical to ETSI EN 301 064-1 Version 1.1.2, produced by the ETSI Technical Committee Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) and published by SIST. It specifies the Q3 interface for managing an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching network element in a Telecommunications Management Network (TMN), covering the information model and the protocols for management information transfer. It is aimed at engineers, operations-system designers, and suppliers working on ATM switch management over TMN interfaces.

What does SIST EN 301 064-1 V1.1.2:2003 specify?

SIST EN 301 064-1 V1.1.2:2003 specifies the Q3 interface between an ATM switch and the TMN for configuration, fault, and performance management. It also covers signalling-channel configuration, broadband customer administration, and call routing, including interworking with narrowband switches.

The document is organized into:

  • Clause 1: Scope
  • Clause 2: References
  • Clause 3: Definitions and abbreviations
  • Clause 4: Information model diagrams
  • Clause 5: Formal object class definitions
  • Clause 6: Type definitions
  • Clause 7: Protocol stacks
  • Annexes A to E
AnnexWhat it covers
AATM switch management requirements
BReference scenario for the management of the ATM switching network element
CFunctional architecture, including SDH-based and cell-based interfaces
DPoint-to-multipoint connections
EBibliography

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 064-1 V1.1.2:2003?

The standard focuses on a management information model for the control plane of an ATM switch. In practice, that means the document tells implementers which managed objects and interface points are needed to configure, observe, and control the switch through Q3.

Scope and exclusions

The scope includes configuration, fault, and performance management, plus signalling channels and B-ISDN signalling. It also includes management of broadband customer administration and call routing, including interworking with narrowband switches.

The scope excludes security management, user-plane ATM Adaptation Layers (AALs), and the definition of TMN operations-system functionality. This matters because implementers can limit their design to control-plane management rather than trying to cover every ATM function.

Q3 interface and reference scenario

Clause B describes the Q3 interface as the TMN interface between network elements or Q-adapters and operations systems without mediation, and between operations systems and mediation devices. Annex B also states that the work concentrates on mapping the information model onto CMIP and mapping CMIP onto the ATM protocol stack.

That is the practical implementation path: define the managed objects first, then connect them to the management protocol and stack used at the Q3 point.

Information model and object classes

Clause 4 gives entity-relationship models for:

  • ATM generic modelling
  • ATM interworking and adaptation layer modelling
  • Broadband customer administration modelling
  • Broadband routeing modelling

Clause 5 defines the managed object classes. It allows managedElementR1 and log to be instantiated, and it says that uni-directional trails are modelled with bi-directional objects by setting the unused direction to a null value.

For broadband customer administration, Clause 5 defines object classes such as clipIndBb, clirIndBb, cugSubscriptionOptionIndBb, colpIndBb, colrIndBb, subIndBb, and userToUserSignallingIndBb. These objects are the concrete management hooks for supplementary service options.

Type definitions

Clause 6 defines an ASN.1 module with the object identifiers informationModel and managedObjectClass. In practice, these identifiers support consistent registration and exchange of the management model.

Functional architecture

Annex C describes the functional architecture for SDH-based interfaces and cell-based interfaces, then shows the higher ATM layers. The text ties these layers to OAM flows, loss-of-signal conditions, loss of frame, cell delineation, and header-error behavior, which matters when mapping alarms and performance events into management objects.

What terms does SIST EN 301 064-1 V1.1.2:2003 define?

  • ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) - The switching technology whose network-element management is modelled by this standard.
  • TMN (Telecommunications Management Network) - The management framework that uses the Q3 interface to control the ATM switch.
  • Q3 interface - The TMN interface used here between ATM network elements, Q-adapters, operations systems, and mediation devices.
  • B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) - The broadband service context used for signalling, customer administration, and management modelling.
  • AAL5 - The ATM Adaptation Layer Type 5, which is within scope because it is used in the control plane.
  • SAAL - The signalling ATM adaptation layer, also within scope because it supports signalling in the control plane.
  • managedElementR1 - A managed object class that may be instantiated in this model.

Who uses SIST EN 301 064-1 V1.1.2:2003?

ATM switch manufacturers, TMN and OSS designers, network operators, mediation-device suppliers, and test teams use this standard. They use it to define the Q3 management interface, decide which managed objects to implement, and align protocol mapping and alarm/performance handling.

It is also useful to quality managers and buyers who need to check whether a product or management system supports the ATM control-plane management model expected on the Q3 interface.

ETSIEN 301 064-1 V1.1.2 (1999-01)51ScopeThe present document specifies the Q3 interface between an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switch and theTelecommunications Management Network (TMN) for the support of configuration, fault and performance managementfunctions. The interface specified is that between TMN network elements or Q-adapters which interface to TMNOperations Systems (OSs) without mediation and between OSs and mediation devices, as defined in ITU-TRecommendation M.3010 [5]. Fault and performance management together include both passive monitoring of reportsand active fault isolation. The configuration by management of channels for signalling, including those for B-ISDN signalling, is within the scopeof the present document. The management of broadband customer administration and the configuration for call routeingincluding that for interworking with narrowband switches for both incoming and outgoing interfaces is also within thescope of the present document. An ATM switch may include ATM crossconnect functionality, but this is specified by reference to EN 300 820-1 [22] orthe ITU-T Recommendation I.751 [4] and by importing the relevant classes of managed objects where appropriate.Existing protocols are used where possible, and the focus of the work is on defining the object model. The definition ofthe functionality of TMN operations systems is outside the scope of the present document. The management of ATM Adaptation Layers (AALs) which are only used in the user plane is outside the scope of thepresent document since the broadband switch management has no visibility of ATM adaptation for the user plane.Management of AAL5 and the Signalling ATM Adaptation Layer (SAAL) is within the scope since these are used in thecontrol plane.Security management is outside the scope of the present document.2ReferencesReferences may be made to:a)specific versions of publications (identified by date of publication, edition number, version number, etc.), inwhich case, subsequent revisions to the referenced document do not apply; orb)all versions up to and including the identified version (identified by "up to and including" before the versionidentity); orc)all versions subsequent to and including the identified version (identified by "onwards" following the versionidentity); ord)publications without mention of a specific version, in which case the latest version applies.A non-specific reference to an ETS shall also be taken to refer to later versions published as an EN with the samenumber.2.1Normative references[1]ITU-T Recommendation I.311 (1993): "B-ISDN general network aspects".[2]ITU-T Recommendation I.363.5 (1996): "B-ISDN ATM Adaptation Layer specification: Type 5AAL".[3]ITU-T Recommendation I.610 (1992): "B-ISDN operation and maintenance principles andfunctions".[4]ITU-T Recommendation I.751 (1997): "Asynchronous transfer mode management of the networkelement view".[5]ITU-T Recommendation M.3010 (1995): "Principles for a Telecommunications managementnetwork".SIST EN 301 064-1 V1.1.2:2003
