Tests for geometrical properties of aggregates - Part 10: Assessment of fines - Grading of filler aggregates (air jet sieving)

This European Standard describes the reference method used for type testing and in cases of dispute for determining the particle size distribution up to 2 mm size of natural or manufactured origin filler aggregate using air jet sieving. For other purposes, in particular factory production control, other methods may be used provided that an appropriate working relationship with the reference method has been established.
NOTE   A wet sieving procedure conforming to EN 933-1 can be used as an alternative method. However, this procedure is not applicable for mixed filler.

Overview

SIST EN 933-10:2009 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a reference method for determining the particle size distribution of filler aggregates up to 2 mm in size, using air jet sieving. This standard applies to natural or manufactured origin filler aggregates and is primarily intended for type testing and dispute resolution. Alternative methods, such as a wet sieving procedure conforming to EN 933-1, exist but have limitations, such as being unsuitable for mixed filler materials.

The method outlined in SIST EN 933-10:2009 is part of a broader series of tests for the geometrical properties of aggregates. It provides a reliable, precise way to assess fines and the grading of filler aggregates, which is critical to quality control and performance assessment in construction materials.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
SIST EN 933-10:2009 establishes a reference method for air jet sieving to evaluate particle size distribution of filler aggregates (≤ 2 mm). It is designed for type testing and resolving testing disputes.

  • Test Principle
The standard employs a dry sieving process using air jets to separate particles based on size. The process involves passing the aggregate through a series of sieves with apertures of 2 mm, 0.125 mm, and 0.063 mm. The mass of material retained on each sieve is measured and expressed as a percentage of the original dry sample mass.

  • Apparatus and Equipment
Equipment must conform with EN 932-5 general requirements, including:

    • Air jet sieving apparatus operating at a controlled air pressure difference of (3.0 ± 0.5) kPa
    • Test sieves with round frames and precise square aperture sizes (0.063 mm, 0.125 mm, 2 mm)
    • Thermostatically controlled ventilated oven for drying samples to constant mass (110 ± 5 °C)
  • Sample Preparation and Testing Procedure
Test portions of approximately 50 g are dried, cooled, and weighed. The sieving follows with measured timing and pressure controls to ensure separation without particle agglomeration or electrostatic interference.

  • Calculations and Reporting
Results include the mass retained on each sieve as percentage values and cumulative percentages passing each sieve. The test report must reference the standard, sample identification, laboratory details, and test results. Optional graphical data presentations can enhance interpretation.

  • Precision
Repeatability and reproducibility tests indicate high reliability, with values of r = 3% and R = 3.5% respectively, ensuring consistent results.

Applications

  • Aggregate Quality Control
SIST EN 933-10:2009 is essential for producers and users of filler aggregates, ensuring that fines and particle size distributions meet strict specifications for construction applications.

  • Type Testing and Certification
Certification bodies and laboratories use this standard to perform compliance testing for natural or manufactured filler aggregates.

  • Dispute Resolution
The standard serves as the authoritative reference method in cases where disagreements arise on aggregate grading results.

  • Factory Production Control
While the described method is for type testing, manufacturers can develop factory-control procedures linked to this reference method to assure ongoing product quality.

  • Road and Asphalt Mixing
Accurate grading of filler aggregates is critical in bituminous mixtures for roads and pavements, influencing durability and performance.

This contributes to higher quality, safety, and regulatory compliance within the construction materials industry.
