Abstract

ISO 1805:2006 specifies a method of testing the breaking force and knot breaking force of netting yarns for fishing nets.
Tests may be carried out in both the dry and wet states, but tests in the wet state on the knotted yarn are considered to be particularly appropriate in indicating the behaviour of the yarn in use.

SIST EN ISO 1805:2007 is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 1805:2006, and it is identical to ISO 1805:2006. It specifies a test method for determining the breaking force and knot breaking force of netting yarns used for fishing nets. The standard is intended for laboratories, manufacturers, and buyers who need comparable results for yarn strength in dry or wet conditions.

What does SIST EN ISO 1805:2007 specify?

SIST EN ISO 1805:2007 specifies a method for testing the breaking force and knot breaking force of netting yarns for fishing nets. The method can be used on dry specimens or on specimens tested after wetting, with wet knotted yarns highlighted as particularly relevant to in-use behaviour.

The document is organized into these main parts:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
  • Clause 4 - Principle
  • Clause 5 - Apparatus
  • Clause 6 - Sampling
  • Clause 7 - Preparation of samples
  • Clause 8 - Requirements for testing
  • Clause 9 - Number of tests
  • Clause 10 - Test procedure
  • Clause 11 - Calculation and expression of results
  • Clause 12 - Test report

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 1805:2007?

SIST EN ISO 1805:2007 is built around a tensile test until rupture, with separate attention to unknotted yarn and yarn tied with a knot. In practice, the standard asks the user to control the test machine, the conditioning state of the yarn, the knotting method, and the way results are reported.

Test principle and measuring equipment

Clause 4 says the yarn is extended in the dry or wet state until rupture while the applied force is recorded or indicated. Clause 5 allows three machine types - constant rate of elongation, constant rate of load, and constant rate of traverse - but gives preference to constant rate of elongation machines. The machine must hold the sample without slip or damage, keep force error within ± 1 %, and accommodate a nominal gauge length of at least 250 mm. That matters because poor gripping or force control can change the measured breaking force.

Conditioning and wet testing

Clause 8 requires dry specimens to be brought to the standard atmosphere in ISO 139 before testing. For wet testing, specimens are immersed in tap water at (20 ± 2) °C for at least 12 h, or by agreement in a wetting-agent solution for a shorter period. This means the moisture state is part of the test result, so the wetting method must be stated clearly.

Sampling and sample preparation

Clauses 6 and 7 require sampling by recognized national standards or by agreement between the parties, and the yarn must be removed from the package without altering the twist. Clause 8 also requires at least 250 mm free length between the holding devices. In practice, this helps keep results comparable between suppliers and test laboratories.

Test duration, valid tests, and knots

Clause 8 sets a target mean time-to-break of (20 ± 3) s, with longer durations allowed when the apparatus or grips cannot achieve that rate. Clause 9 requires at least ten single valid tests per sample package. Clause 10 says wet specimens are tested immediately after removal from water, knots are made immediately before testing, and the weaver's knot is used for knotted yarns. Tests that slip, are damaged by the grips, or do not break at the knot are discarded and recorded.

Results and reporting

Clause 11 gives the calculation of average breaking force, average tenacity, and breaking length, and allows coefficient of variation and confidence interval when needed. Clause 12 lists the report items, including yarn identification, machine and grip type, sampling method, wetting conditions, average breaking force, and any deviations from the procedure. That matters because the report has to explain exactly how the result was obtained.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 1805:2007 define?

  • Breaking force - the maximum force observed during the breaking test.
  • Force at rupture - the final force at the moment the specimen, or its first component, breaks at or after the breaking force.
  • Tenacity - breaking force per unit resultant linear density of the conditioned specimen.
  • Breaking length - the calculated length of specimen whose conditioned weight would produce its breaking force.
  • Time-to-break - the time from force application to reaching the breaking force, measured in seconds.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 1805:2007?

SIST EN ISO 1805:2007 is used by fishing net manufacturers, netting yarn suppliers, test laboratories, quality managers, and buyers who need strength data for incoming inspection, product comparison, or specification control. It is also used when dry and wet performance must be compared under the same test method.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 1805:2007 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 1805:2007 is the implementation of EN ISO 1805:2006, and ISO 1805:2006 is identified as the second edition. The foreword states that this second edition cancels and replaces ISO 1805:1973 and that it is a technical revision.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 1805:2007?

  • ISO 139 - provides the standard atmosphere for conditioning and testing dry specimens.
  • ISO 858 - gives the Tex system designation for netting yarns, which is used in the test report to identify the yarn.

What does the SIST EN ISO 1805:2007 document contain?

The document contains the full test method, including the measuring principle, apparatus requirements, sampling rules, wet and dry conditioning, and the step-by-step test procedure. It also includes calculation rules for breaking force, tenacity, and breaking length, plus the items that belong in a test report.

It includes a figure for the holding devices used when testing netting yarns without knots, and a figure showing the weaver's knot used for knotted yarn testing. These figures support correct grip setup and knot preparation.

The document also gives practical controls for test validity, such as discarding slipped specimens or those damaged by the grips, and recording any break that occurs before the breaking force is reached. That helps laboratories report results that can be traced back to the exact test conditions.

ISO 1805:2006(E) iv © ISO 2006 – All rights reserved Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. ISO 1805 was prepared by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 248, Textiles and textile products, in collaboration with Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement). This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 1805:1973), of which it constitutes a technical revision.
