Overview

EN 62148-16:2009 (adoption of IEC 62148-16:2009) is a package and interface standard for fibre optic active components, specifically defining the physical interface specification for transmitter and receiver components that mate with the LC connector. The standard’s intent is to specify physical, electrical and mechanical requirements that enable mechanical interchangeability of transmitters and receivers both on the PCB and for panel-mounting. It is intended to be used together with IEC/EN 62148‑1:2002 (general guidance).

Key topics and technical requirements

The standard provides detailed requirements and reference drawings rather than electrical performance limits. Major technical topics include:

  • Scope and classification

    • Defines classes of transmitter and receiver components intended for use with the LC connector interface.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

    • EMC guidance and referencing of relevant EMC drafting practices to ensure device compatibility in systems.
  • Electrical interface and terminal assignments

    • Numbering and assignments of electrical terminals for multiple device configurations (transmitters and receivers).
    • Separate specifications for components with and without thermo-electric coolers (TEC).
  • Mechanical outline and PCB footprint

    • Package outline drawings and recommended PCB pattern layouts to ensure consistent board-level mounting and panel fit.
    • Dimensions and recommended footprint practices for reliable mechanical interchangeability.
  • Receiver types

    • Specific provisions for receivers using PIN photodiodes and avalanche photodiodes (APD), including alternate electrical options and block diagrams.
  • Application to transceivers

    • Annex A provides guidance for integrating these components into XFP transceivers, including PCB arrangement and receptacle interface when joining TOSA/ROSA.

Applications and who uses this standard

EN 62148-16:2009 is used by:

  • Optical component manufacturers (TOSA/ROSA design) to produce LC-compatible modules.
  • Transceiver vendors and OEMs designing module housings and PCB assemblies (e.g., XFP).
  • PCB designers and mechanical engineers implementing recommended footprints and panel cutouts to guarantee interchangeability.
  • Test houses and compliance engineers verifying mechanical and interface conformity.
  • Systems integrators and network equipment vendors ensuring field-replaceable optical modules fit standardized receptacles.

Practical benefits include reduced design rework, improved interoperability between suppliers, and predictable mounting and mating behavior for LC-based transmitter/receiver modules.

Related standards

  • IEC/EN 62148‑1:2002 - General and guidance for package and interface standards (must be read in conjunction).
  • IEC 61754‑20 - Fibre optic connector interfaces: Type LC connector family (normative reference).
  • IEC Guide 107 (EMC drafting guidance) and other referenced standards for dimensional and EMC harmonization.

EN 62148-16:2009 is essential for anyone designing or specifying LC-interface optical transmitters/receivers and looking to ensure standardized mechanical and electrical integration.
