Overview
ISO 7654:1998 is an international standard that specifies the mounting and connecting dimensions for spin-on fuel filters used in diesel (compression-ignition) engines in road vehicles. Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this third edition standard provides precise size, tolerance, and sealing requirements to ensure compatibility and reliable performance of fuel filters across different manufacturers.
This standard covers two types of spin-on fuel filter designs: those without an inner sealing (preferred design) and those with an inner sealing (alternative design). The document includes detailed dimensional drawings, specifications for sealing surfaces, and guidance on markings for identifying filter types and installation instructions.
Key Topics
- Mounting Dimensions: ISO 7654 defines exact dimensions to ensure proper fit of spin-on fuel filters on diesel engine fuel filter heads, including diameter ranges and connecting thread sizes (e.g., M16 × 1.5, M24 × 1.5).
- Connecting Dimensions: Specific requirements for the connecting thread and sealing surfaces are detailed to guarantee secure and leak-free installation.
- Sealing Requirements: The standard illustrates the required shape and compression of sealing rings, including cases where a metal-to-metal contact is allowed if the filter uses molded sealing rings.
- Alternative Inner Sealing Design: Annex A describes an optional design featuring an inner sealing ring at the thread connection, ensuring added sealing protection when mutually agreed upon by manufacturers and users.
- Marking and Identification: Guidelines for optional markings on filters include filter type designation, thread size, and installation instructions to assist in proper filter replacement and compatibility verification.
- Related Filter Heads: Reference is made to related ISO standards for filter heads, such as ISO 7310, ISO 7311, and ISO 7577, which define connecting dimensions for fuel filter mounting surfaces and heads.
Applications
ISO 7654:1998 applies specifically to the automotive industry and manufacturers of diesel engine components, focusing on:
- Automotive OEMs and component manufacturers: Ensuring fuel filter designs conform to global standards for dimensions, compatibility, and functionality.
- Aftermarket fuel filter suppliers: Guaranteeing filters fit common diesel engines across different brands with standardized mounting and connecting dimensions.
- Vehicle maintenance and repair services: Facilitating correct filter replacement practices by referencing standardized dimensions and installation guidelines.
- Quality assurance and testing: Providing measurable tolerances and dimensions to verify product conformity and customer safety.
By adhering to ISO 7654, stakeholders benefit from interchangeability of parts, reduced compatibility issues, and enhanced reliability of diesel engine fuel filtration systems.
Related Standards
ISO 7654 is part of a family of standards addressing fuel filtration components and related vehicle systems:
- ISO 7310: Diesel engines - Heads for spin-on fuel filters with horizontal flange - Mounting and connecting dimensions.
- ISO 7311: Diesel engines - Heads for fuel filters with vertical flange - Mounting and connecting dimensions.
- ISO 7577: Road vehicles - Heads for fuel filters with vertical flange and three-bolt fixing for compression engines - Mounting and connecting dimensions.
These related standards complement ISO 7654 by specifying the dimensions of the filter heads that work in conjunction with the spin-on fuel filters, ensuring a fully standardized fuel filtration assembly.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 7654 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 22, Road vehicles, Subcommittee SC 7, Injection equipment and
filters for use on road vehicles.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 7654:1991),
which has been technically revised.
Annex A forms an integral part of this International Standard. Annex B is for

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ISO ISO 7654:1998(E)
Road vehicles — Spin-on fuel filters for diesel engines —
Mounting and connecting dimensions
1 Scope
This international Standard specifies the mounting and connecting dimensions for spin-on fuel filters, with and
without an inner sealing, to be used with diesel (compression-ignition) engines.
The preferred design of spin-on fuel filters are those without an inner sealing, and they are specified in clause 2.
The alternative filter design is specified in annex A and should be used if an inner sealing is required.
The corresponding filter heads are specified in ISO 7310, ISO 7311 and ISO 7577 (see annex B).
2 Dimensions and tolerances
Details not specified in this International Standard are left to the manufacturer’s choice.
2.1 The dimensions and tolerances of the filter shall be in accordance with figure 1.
The shape of the sealing ring shown in X shall be such that effective sealing is ensured. The dimensions of the
compressed sealing ring shall be within the sealing surface shown in figure 2.
The dimension 0,5 mm min. shown in X shall be measured after tightening the filter in accordance with the filter
manufacturer’s recommendations. In cases where moulded sealing rings are used,

NORME INTERNATIONALE ISO ISO 7654:1998(F)
Véhicules routiers — Filtres à combustible vissés pour moteurs
diesels — Dimensions de montage et de raccordement
1 Domaine d'application
figure 2.
