ISO 24450:2005
(Main)Laboratory glassware - Wide-necked boiling flasks
Laboratory glassware - Wide-necked boiling flasks
ISO 24450:2005 specifies requirements and dimensions for an internationally acceptable series of conical flasks and of flat-bottom and round-bottom flasks with wide neck for general laboratory purpose. The flasks are provided for direct use in laboratory, fitting together with other equipment for general laboratory purposes, and for further work up to other products. For narrow-necked boiling flasks, ISO 1773 applies. For boiling flasks with conical ground joints, see ISO 4797.

Overview
ISO 24450:2005 is an international standard specifying the requirements and dimensions for wide-necked boiling flasks used in laboratories. This standard covers a series of conical, flat-bottom, and round-bottom flasks with wide necks for general laboratory use. These flasks are designed to integrate seamlessly with other laboratory equipment and support various experimental processes. The standard ensures uniformity, quality, and safety in the production and use of these essential laboratory glassware items.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: ISO 24450:2005 applies specifically to wide-necked boiling flasks. For narrow-necked boiling flasks, the standard references ISO 1773, and for boiling flasks with conical ground joints, ISO 4797 provides the relevant guidelines.
- Material Requirements: Flasks must be made from borosilicate glass 3.3 according to ISO 3585. This material is selected for its durability, resistance to thermal shock, and chemical inertness.
- Standard Capacities:
- Conical flasks: 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 ml
- Round-bottom flasks: 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, 6000, 10000 ml
- Flat-bottom flasks: 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2000 ml
- Construction and Dimensions:
- Flasks must stand stably on level surfaces without rocking or spinning.
- Necks are circular in cross-section and must maintain strength without extensive flaring.
- Specific dimensional values for overall height, external diameter, and wall thickness are detailed for each flask type and size.
- Neck length is standardized to 1 to 1.25 times the external neck diameter.
- Base radius and diameter proportions are clearly defined for stability and compatibility purposes.
- Marking and Identification:
- Each flask must be permanently marked with nominal volume, manufacturer or vendor's name/mark, and a writable area for further notation.
- The standard recommends including “ISO 24450” on the flask for traceability.
Applications
Wide-necked boiling flasks conforming to ISO 24450:2005 are widely used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and biological laboratories for purposes such as:
- Conducting chemical reactions that require heating or boiling.
- General liquid handling and mixing in experimental procedures.
- Integration with other laboratory apparatus for distillation, reflux, or synthesis.
- Preparation, storage, and measurement of liquids requiring visual volume indication.
- Providing reliable, durable glassware that meets international safety and quality norms.
Their robust design with a wide neck offers easier filling, pouring, and cleaning compared to narrow-necked flasks, beneficial in handling viscous fluids or particulate suspensions.
Related Standards
- ISO 1773: Laboratory glassware - Narrow-necked boiling flasks, focused on flasks with smaller neck diameters.
- ISO 4797: Laboratory glassware - Boiling flasks with conical ground joints, important for flasks designed for tight joint connections.
- ISO 3585: Specifies the properties of borosilicate glass 3.3, the material standard for glassware production under ISO 24450.
Adherence to these standards ensures laboratory glassware compatibility, safety, and quality across global markets.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

Avant-propos
votants.
