Overview

ISO 9183-2:2011 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the basic dimensions, tolerances, and key characteristics of wear plates for press dies, specifically Type B wear plates. These wear plates are primarily designed for use in large pressing operations involving heavy-duty press dies. The standard provides detailed guidelines on the size, positioning of clearance holes for attachment, material recommendations, and hardness requirements to ensure compatibility and performance in industrial pressing applications.

This second edition of ISO 9183-2 updates and refines the dimensions and surface finish specifications to align with ISO 1302:2002, enhancing the practical usability of the wear plates in modern tooling and manufacturing environments.

Key Topics

  • Dimensions and Tolerances: ISO 9183-2:2011 defines the exact dimensions of wear plates in millimeters, including width, length, thickness, and placement of clearance holes for secure attachment during pressing operations. Precise tolerances ensure consistent fits and reliable performance.

  • Attachment Hole Specifications: The standard specifies the size and positioning of holes used to fasten the wear plates onto press dies, enabling standardized installation and maintenance.

  • Material and Hardness Guidance: While the manufacturer retains discretion over the specific materials and hardness selected, ISO 9183-2:2011 provides crucial recommendations to optimize wear resistance and durability of Type B wear plates.

  • Designation Method: The standard establishes a clear and consistent way to designate these wear plates by type, size, and reference number, facilitating easy identification and ordering. For example, a wear plate with a width of 70 mm and length of 100 mm is designated as:
    Plaque de frottement ISO 9183-2 B - 70 × 100

  • Surface Finish: Updates incorporate surface roughness values compliant with ISO 1302:2002 to enhance product documentation and quality control.

Applications

ISO 9183-2:2011 wear plates are critical components in large-scale pressing operations where high mechanical loads and repetitive motions cause friction and wear on press dies. Applications include:

  • Heavy Press Tooling in Automotive Manufacturing: Ensuring longevity and precision in stamping tools for body panels and structural parts.

  • Metal Forming Industry: Enhancing the wear resistance of dies used for shaping metal sheets or components under significant pressure.

  • Industrial Press Machines: Standardized wear plates offer reliable replacement parts to maintain tool integrity and reduce downtime.

  • Moulding and Forging Operations: Wear plates protect expensive die surfaces, improving equipment lifespan and product quality.

By adhering to ISO 9183-2 specifications, manufacturers and users benefit from improved interchangeability of components, predictable performance under operational stresses, and optimized maintenance cycles in demanding manufacturing settings.

Related Standards

Understanding ISO 9183-2 can be complemented by familiarity with the following related standards:

  • ISO 9183-1: Tools for Pressing - Wear plates for press dies - Part 1: Type A
Defines specifications for Type A wear plates used in smaller or different press configurations.

  • ISO 1302:2002 - Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) - Indication of surface texture in technical product documentation
Provides the guidelines on surface finish and roughness indicators used in conjunction with ISO 9183-2.

  • ISO/TC 29 - Small Tools Committee
The technical committee responsible for the development and maintenance of tools and wear parts standards, including press tooling.

Adopting ISO 9183-2:2011 ensures compliance with international tooling benchmarks, promotes consistency across manufacturers, and supports effective quality control in press die wear plate manufacturing and application.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 9183-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Small tools, Subcommittee SC 8, Tools for
pressing and moulding.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 9183-2:1993), of which it constitutes a minor
revision. In particular, the indication of surface textures has been updated in accordance with ISO 1302:2002.

Avant-propos

l'ISO 1302:2002.
