Technical product documentation - Protection notices for restricting the use of documents and products
ISO 16016:2016 specifies the protection notices which serve to prevent the improper use of documents and products whose usage is restricted. With the benefit of a uniform text, protection notices draw attention to the existence of an industrial property right or copyright. Furthermore, they clearly show that the owner of the right claims legal protection to the fullest extent and, in addition to this, they restrict the utilization of the documents or products concerned.

Overview
ISO 16016:2016 - Technical product documentation - Protection notices for restricting the use of documents and products - specifies standardised protection notices to warn against improper use of protected documents and products. The standard defines symbols and wording to indicate copyright, patents, utility models, industrial designs, registered trademarks, and topographies of semiconductor products, helping rights holders and licensees draw clear attention to industrial property and copyright claims.
Key topics and requirements
- Protection symbols: standardized markings such as © (copyright), P in a circle (patent), U in a circle (utility model), D in a circle (design), T or mask‑work notations (semiconductor topography), and ® / TM / SM (registered and unregistered trademarks).
- Data elements for patent/utility/design notices: include country code (WIPO ST.3), publication/registration number, and where relevant WIPO ST.16 codes for patent document kinds.
- Recommended wording:
- Complete version (recommended):
“The reproduction, distribution and utilization of this document as well as the communication of its contents to others without express authorization is prohibited. Offenders will be held liable for the payment of damages. All rights reserved in the event of the grant of a patent, utility model or design.” - Abridged version: “Refer to protection notice ISO 16016” (to be avoided where possible).
- Complete version (recommended):
- Use guidance: notices may appear in catalogues, offers, brochures and on documents or products; if circled characters are not available in a character set, the full designation (e.g., Utility Model CH 679439 B5) should be typed.
- Translations: Annex A provides translations of the recommended protection wording for multilingual distribution.
- Limitations: these notices warn and help furnish proof but do not replace contractual protections; they do not prevent legitimate communication of factual information about the item.
Applications
- Standardizes how companies and authors mark technical drawings, manuals, CAD files, software, brochures and product labels to:
- deter unauthorized reproduction or commercial exploitation,
- support IP / legal claims and evidence,
- provide consistent, multilingual protection statements for international distribution.
- Useful in product documentation workflows, PDM/PLM systems, technical publishing, and marketing collateral where IP visibility is required.
Who should use this standard
- Documentation and technical publishing teams
- IP managers, legal and compliance departments
- Engineering/design organisations, manufacturers and licensors
- Technical translators and international product teams

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

Introduction
The existence of document and product protection, as well as its extent, is primarily oriented towards
fulfilling the requirements of industrial property rights and copyright law. In order to draw the
attention of users to this legally provided protection, additional safeguards are recommended through
the use of protection notices that forestall the improper use of documents and products.
Normally, full protection is afforded only by appropriate contractual agreements between the involved
parties. The protection notices specified in this International Standard serve to warn and explain. They
are designed to facilitate the furnishing of proof and offer additional safeguards to authors and holders
of commercial protection rights.
If any national laws require additional or other requirements for national trade, for example the use of
national language, those requirements are to be respected.
