Abstract

This document specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles of all kinds and in all forms to ironing and to processing on hot cylinders. This document is applicable for hot pressing when the textile is dry, damp or wet which is determined by the end-use of the textile.

ISO 105-X11:2026 is an International Standard published by ISO for testing the colour fastness of textiles to hot pressing. It specifies a laboratory method for checking whether textiles of all kinds retain their colour during ironing and processing on hot cylinders, using dry, damp or wet conditions according to end use. The standard is intended for textile laboratories, manufacturers, and buyers who need a repeatable result for colour change and staining after pressing.

What does ISO 105-X11:2026 specify?

ISO 105-X11:2026 specifies the scope, test principle, apparatus, specimen preparation, procedure and reporting for colour fastness to hot pressing. The document is organized into eight clauses - scope, normative references, terms and definitions, principle, apparatus, test specimen, procedure and test report - followed by a bibliography.

The method applies to textiles in all forms. In practice, that means the same standard can be used on fabric, yarn prepared as fabric or wound layers, and loose fibre prepared as a sheet for testing.

What are the key requirements of ISO 105-X11:2026?

Test conditions and pressing modes

ISO 105-X11:2026 covers three pressing conditions: dry pressing, damp pressing and wet pressing. The choice depends on the textile’s end use, which is why the standard matters for products that may be ironed dry or pressed while moisture is present.

  • Clause 4.1 uses a dry specimen pressed for a specified time at a specified temperature and pressure.
  • Clause 4.2 uses a dry specimen with wet cotton adjacent fabric on top, which simulates damp pressing and shows whether moisture changes staining or colour change.
  • Clause 4.3 uses a wet specimen with wet adjacent fabric, which represents a more severe moisture condition.
  • Clause 7.1.1 states that the pressing temperature should suit the fibre type and construction, and blends should use the temperature for the least heat-resistant fibre.
  • Clause 7.1.1 gives three common pressing temperatures and allows other temperatures if they are recorded in the report.

Apparatus and test specimen

ISO 105-X11:2026 gives a defined pressing assembly so results can be compared between laboratories.

  • Clause 5.1 specifies a heating device with smooth parallel plates and a pressure of 4 kPa ± 1 kPa.
  • Clause 5.1.4 allows a household iron if its temperature and pressure can be checked, but the report must state when this is used because reproducibility is more limited.
  • Clause 5.2 requires a smooth heat-resistant sheet for insulation.
  • Clause 5.3 and 7.1.3 use wool flannel padding and dry undyed cotton cloth under the specimen.
  • Clause 6 sets specimen preparation for fabric, yarn and loose fibre, all to the same 40 mm × 100 mm size, so the test piece matches the pressing area and can be handled consistently.

Assessment and reporting

ISO 105-X11:2026 measures two outcomes - change in colour of the specimen and staining of the adjacent fabric.

  • Clause 4.4 and 7.5 require comparison with the grey scales for colour change and staining.
  • Clause 7.5.1 requires one assessment immediately and another after at least 4 hours in the standard atmosphere, which captures any delayed colour shift after pressing.
  • Clause 7.5.2 uses the more heavily stained side of the adjacent fabric for the staining rating.
  • Clause 8 requires the test report to state the exact standard used, the sample identification, the procedure, the heating device and temperature, both colour-change ratings, the staining rating, the date, deviations and any unusual observations.

Who uses ISO 105-X11:2026?

ISO 105-X11:2026 is used by textile test laboratories, quality managers, production teams and buyers who need a common way to judge pressing performance. It is relevant for fabrics, yarns, garments and other textile products that may be ironed, finished on hot cylinders or otherwise exposed to heat and pressure. Specifiers use it when they need to compare products on colour change and staining after a realistic pressing treatment.

What changed in ISO 105-X11:2026 from the previous edition?

ISO 105-X11:2026 is the fifth edition and it replaces ISO 105-X11:1994. The foreword states that the document was technically revised, and the main stated change is in subclause 7.1.1: the pressing temperatures were changed to 120 °C, 160 °C and 210 °C from 110 °C, 150 °C and 200 °C, in line with ISO 3758:2023.

Which standards are used with ISO 105-X11:2026?

  • ISO 105-A01:2010 - gives the general principles of colour fastness testing and the air-conditioning step used before the second colour-change assessment.
  • ISO 105-A02 - provides the grey scale for assessing change in colour.
  • ISO 105-A03 - provides the grey scale for assessing staining.
  • ISO 105-F02 - specifies the cotton and viscose adjacent fabric used alongside the test specimen.
  • ISO 139 - gives the standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing textiles.
  • ISO 3696:1987 - specifies the grade 3 water used for damp and wet pressing.
  • ISO 105-P01:1993 - is cited as a related dry-heat colour fastness method that may use the same heating device.

What does the ISO 105-X11:2026 document contain?

ISO 105-X11:2026 gives the full pressing method in clauses 4 to 7, including the principle for dry, damp and wet pressing, the apparatus setup, specimen preparation for different textile forms, and the step-by-step procedure. It also describes how to assess colour change and staining against the grey scales, and how long to condition the specimen before the second reading. Clause 8 lists the report items so users can record the exact test conditions and any deviations.
