Abstract

This document specifies the characteristics of grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves (with closed ends), in steel and stainless steel, and with nominal diameter 1 mm to 25 mm. These grooved pins are designed to fulfil the main following functions: relative rotation of the assembled parts, and positioning or guiding, with an easy installation (due to its symmetrical shape) and a high level of pull-out resistance (due to the elastic fit behaviour of the pin). The general requirements (including functional principles for grooved pins and assembly) are specified in ISO 13669.

ISO 8743:2026 is an International Standard from ISO for grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves. It specifies the characteristics, dimensions, materials, surface conditions, package labelling and designation for steel and stainless steel pins with nominal diameters from 1 mm to 25 mm. The standard is used when a pin is needed for relative rotation, positioning or guiding, with easy installation and high pull-out resistance.

What does ISO 8743:2026 specify?

ISO 8743:2026 covers grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves and closed ends, in steel and stainless steel. It also sets out how the document is organized, with clauses on scope, references, terms, principles, dimensions, material and surface requirements, package labelling and designation.

Clause 1 states the pin type, size range and main functions. Clause 5 and Clause 6 are the practical core for design and procurement, because they define the standard sizes, tolerances, materials, coatings and acceptance rules that users need to specify and check.

What are the key requirements of ISO 8743:2026?

ISO 8743:2026 defines the pin geometry, the standard size range, the permitted materials and finishes, and the information that must appear on the package. In practice, this is the information needed to order the right pin, make it to the right shape and inspect it consistently.

Geometry and size control

Clause 5 says the dimensions shall follow Figure 1 and Tables 1 and 2. The pin uses a symmetrical shape, with rounded ends as the default and chamfered ends only when requested at the time of order. The groove arrangement, groove length and location are controlled by tolerances, and the pin diameter d applies only where grooves are absent.

For users, this means the pin is not specified only by nominal diameter and length - the groove form and end style also matter for fit and assembly.

Dimensional tolerances and preferred sizes

Clause 5 gives standard diameter and length series, including some bracketed sizes marked as non-preferred. It also gives tolerance ranges for groove length and groove positioning based on the pin length. The expanded diameter d and pin straightness t are controlled according to ISO 13669.

For manufacturers and inspectors, these are the checks that determine whether a pin matches the standard size and can be accepted for use.

Materials, coatings and surface condition

Clause 6 ties the product to ISO 13669 for general requirements and to ISO 3506-6, ISO 4042, ISO 9717 and ISO 10683 for stainless steel selection and coating systems. The standard covers steel symbol St and stainless steel grades A1, A2, A4, C1 and F1. It also allows other materials by agreement between purchaser and manufacturer, with material properties and expanded diameter agreed before order.

For buyers, this means material and surface condition need to be stated clearly if the default steel or stainless steel condition is not enough for the application.

Workmanship and acceptance

Clause 6 requires pins to be free of burrs and detrimental defects, and acceptance inspection is specified by ISO 3269. For plated or coated pins, the dimensional limits apply before coating.

For quality control, this separates manufacturing defects from coating effects and gives a defined acceptance route.

Package labelling and designation

Clause 7 lists the minimum package information: the ISO 8743 reference, nominal diameter and length, CH where relevant, steel symbol or stainless grade, surface condition, supplier identification, lot number and quantity. Clause 8 gives the designation rule and the default delivery condition when no finish is stated.

For procurement and traceability, this is the information needed to identify the exact pin delivered and to link it to its lot.

What terms does ISO 8743:2026 define?

  • Grooved pins - Pins with grooves that deform elastically in the hole and hold by fit.
  • Half-length centre oval grooves - Grooves placed in the centre region over half the pin length, with an oval form and closed ends.
  • Expanded diameter, d - The controlled diameter used in the grooved area for fit and assembly.
  • Pin straightness, t - The straightness characteristic controlled together with the expanded diameter.
  • RN - Rounded ends, the default end form for these pins.
  • CH - Chamfered ends, used only when specifically requested in the order.
  • St - The symbol used for steel pins.
  • Acceptance inspection - The inspection route used for acceptance, as referenced to ISO 3269.

Who uses ISO 8743:2026?

ISO 8743:2026 is used by fastener manufacturers, distributors, purchasers, designers and quality inspectors. It helps them agree the pin type, confirm dimensions and surface condition, and document the package and lot identity for delivery and acceptance.

It is also relevant to assembly and maintenance teams that need grooved pins for relative rotation, positioning or guiding in mechanical assemblies.

What changed in ISO 8743:2026 from the previous edition?

ISO 8743:2026 cancels and replaces ISO 8743:1997. The foreword states that the revision moved the common terms, assembly principles, hole dimensions, expanded diameter control, straightness, mechanical and physical properties, and inspection into ISO 13669, added non-preferred diameters, updated expanded diameter values, added stainless steel values and grades, added tolerances for rounded and chamfered ends, added groove length and location tolerances, and added package labelling requirements in Clause 7.

Which standards are used with ISO 8743:2026?

  • ISO 13669 - Gives the general requirements for grooved pins, including principles of grooved pins and assembly, and control of expanded diameter and straightness.
  • ISO 1891-4 - Provides the lot numbering reference used for package labelling.
  • ISO 3269 - Sets the acceptance inspection method.
  • ISO 3506-6 - Supports stainless steel selection for fasteners.
  • ISO 4042 - Covers electroplated coating systems.
  • ISO 9717 - Covers phosphate conversion coatings.
  • ISO 10683 - Covers non-electrolytically applied zinc flake coating systems.

What does the ISO 8743:2026 document contain?

ISO 8743:2026 contains Figure 1 for the pin form and end options, Tables 1 and 2 for sizes and tolerances, and Table 3 for material, surface condition and acceptance references. It also includes package labelling requirements and two designation examples that show how to identify a pin by diameter, length, end form, material and surface condition.

The document is structured for design, manufacturing, ordering and inspection. In practice, it tells users what to make, how to identify it, and which companion standards to use when checking material, coating and acceptance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,

1 Domaine d'application
