BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 39, Anchor Chains : Lugless Joining Shackles,
Kenfer Type, was drawn up by the Technical Committee IS0 /TC 8, Shipbuilding
Details for Sea Navigation, the Secretariat of which is held by the Hoofdcommis-
sie voor de Normalisatie in Nederland (H.C.N.N.).
At its initial meeting, held in Paris, June 1949, the Technical Committee
unanimously decided to adopt a proposal which had been drawn up in 1939
by the former International Federation of the National Standardizing Associa-
tions (ISA).
The following Member Bodies took part in the meeting:
Belgium Norway
Denmark (as observer) Poland
France Portugal
Italy Sweden
Netherlands U.S.S.R.
New Zealand
The Draft Proposal drawn up on that basis was submitted by correspon-
dence to the members of the Technical Committee and adopted as a Draft IS0
Recommendation, no objection having been raised.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was submitted to all the IS0 Member
Bodies in October 1953 and approved, subject to certain editorial amendments,
by the following 23 (out of a total of 36) Member Bodies:

France Mexico Union of South Africa
Germany Netherlands United Kingdom

The U.S.S.R. opposed approval of the Draft, giving preference to its own
Standard GOST 228-52.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence
to the IS0 Council, which decided, in May 1957, to accept it as a

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation IS0 /R 39, Chaînes d’ancre : Mailles démontables,
système Kenter, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique IS0 /TC 8, Construction
de navires pour la navigation maritime, dont le Secrétariat est assumé par la
Hoofdcommissie voor de Normalisatie in Nederland (H.C.N.N.).
Au cours de sa première réunion, tenue à Paris, en juin 1949, le Comité
Technique décida, à l’unanimité, d’adopter une proposition qui avait été établie
en 1939 par l’ancienne Fédération Internationale des Associations nationales
de Normalisation (ISA).
Les Comités Membres suivants participaient à cette réunion :

Nouvelle-Zélande
L’avant-projet établi sur cette base fut soumis par correspondance aux
membres du Comité Technique et adopté comme Projet de Recommandation
ISO, aucune objection n’ayant été présentée.
Soumis à tous les Comités Membres de l’IS0, en octobre 1953, le Projet
de Recommandation IS0 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques amendements
d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants, au nombre de 23 sur
un total de 36:
