Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-17: Tests - Cold
Details a procedure for determining the suitability of a fibre optic device to withstand extended low temperature (cold)environmental conditions, which may occur in use, storage and/or transport. This procedure does not assess the ability of a device to operate during temperature variations; in this case, IEC 61300-2-22 would be used.

Overview
IEC 61300-2-17:2003 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies a standardized test procedure for assessing the resilience of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components under extended low temperature (cold) environmental conditions. This standard ensures that fiber optic devices can withstand cold storage, transport, and operating environments without sustaining damage.
The scope of IEC 61300-2-17 focuses strictly on evaluating the ability of devices to endure prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, rather than their performance during dynamic temperature changes. For testing temperature variations, IEC 61300-2-22 is applicable. This standard outlines the test setup, environmental chamber requirements, testing procedure, and severity criteria to provide repeatable and comparable results.
Key Topics
Cold Environment Suitability Testing
The standard details how to assess fibre optic devices’ durability at extended low temperatures-specifically at test temperatures such as −40 °C, −25 °C, or −10 °C maintained for 96 hours with temperature deviation limited to ±3 °C.Testing Procedure According to IEC 60068-2-1
The testing follows IEC 60068-2-1 (Test Ab) methodology, involving gradual temperature reduction at no more than 1 °C per minute, conditioning the device under test (DUT) at the specified cold temperature, then returning it to ambient temperature for evaluation.Test Equipment and Setup
Utilizes an environmental chamber that maintains homogeneous, controlled low temperatures and allows monitoring and measurement access during testing. The device is tested in its normal operating orientation with necessary cables included in the cold chamber.Measurement and Conditioning
Initial and final measurements of optical and mechanical properties are stipulated, including conditioning steps like cleaning and stabilization. The standard also allows specifications to require optical measurements during the test at intervals up to one hour.Recovery and Performance Evaluation
Devices are dried if needed after testing and given a recovery period at standard atmospheric conditions before final assessment to confirm suitability and compliance with performance criteria.
Applications
IEC 61300-2-17:2003 applies broadly across industries and sectors where fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components are deployed in cold or harsh environments, including:
Telecommunications Infrastructure
Ensuring outdoor fiber optic connectors and passive components maintain integrity in cold climates during network deployment or maintenance.Aerospace and Defense
Verifying fiber optic components can endure low temperatures during high-altitude flight or cold storage conditions.Transportation and Logistics
Assessing robustness of fiber optic devices subject to cold weather transit or long-term refrigerated storage.Industrial Automation and Energy
Qualifying fiber optic sensors and interconnections operating in cold storage facilities, winter environments, or cold climates.
The standard supports manufacturers and users in benchmarking cold-environment durability, guiding product development, quality assurance, and compliance verification processes.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 61300-2-17 has been prepared by subcommittee 86B: Fibre optic
interconnecting devices and passive components, of IEC technical committee 86: Fibre optics.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1995. It constitutes
a technical revision.
