Overview
IEC 61754-35:2020 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the connector interface dimensions for the LSHE (Low Smoke Halogen-free Environment) family of fibre optic connectors. This connector family is specifically designed for use in harsh environments, such as outdoor and industrial settings, where robust performance and reliability are critical. The standard supports connectors with up to four termini and aims to ensure interoperability and high-quality optical connections under challenging conditions.
Key Topics
- Connector Interface Dimensions: Clear specifications for plug and socket interfaces of the LSHE connector family are provided, ensuring standardized dimensions and compatibility.
- Harsh Environment Suitability: The standard targets connectors that conform to performance requirements according to IEC 61753-1, making them resilient against adverse environmental factors such as moisture, dust, temperature extremes, and mechanical stress.
- Hermaphroditic Design: The connection system is hermaphroditic, allowing adaptors to be fixed on either the plug or socket side, facilitating flexible assembly and maintenance.
- Fibre Types and Termini: Supports up to four termini per connector, each with a nominal 2.5 mm ferrule capable of housing various fibre types including single-mode (SM), multi-mode (MM), and other fiber types. Polishing types supported include Physical Contact (PC) and Angled Physical Contact (APC).
- Push-Pull Mechanism: Mechanical engagement between plug and socket connectors is ensured by a reliable push-pull coupling system for secure connections even in rough environments.
- Intermateability: Plugs and sockets compliant with IEC 61754-35 parts 1 and 2 are guaranteed to mate properly within the standard LSHE family.
- Ferrule Grades and Positioning: Specifies ferrule quality grades and precise positioning tolerances to maintain optical performance.
- Adaptor and Panel Mounting: Provides detailed dimensional requirements for adaptors and panel cutouts to facilitate installation and integration.
Applications
IEC 61754-35:2020 is critical for industries and applications involving fibre optic networks where exposure to harsh conditions is common:
- Outdoor Fibre Optic Networks: Telecom and data communications infrastructures requiring reliable optical connections in exposed environments.
- Industrial Automation and Control: Factory floors and process control systems with high levels of dust, vibration, and temperature fluctuations.
- Transportation and Railways: Optical links in rail systems, subways, and other transportation that demand robust connectors resistant to mechanical shocks.
- Military and Aerospace: Harsh environment communication systems demanding connectors with stringent performance under mechanical and environmental stresses.
- Power and Energy Sector: Optical sensing and data communication in substations and power plants with challenging ambient and operational conditions.
Utilizing the LSHE connector family according to IEC 61754-35 enhances system durability, reduces downtime from connector failures, and simplifies maintenance through standardized interfaces.
Related Standards
To ensure full compliance and optimal performance, IEC 61754-35 refers to and should be used alongside these key related standards:
- IEC 61753-1: Performance standard for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - provides the environmental and mechanical performance criteria under which LSHE connectors are qualified.
- IEC 61754-1: General guidance on fibre optic connector interfaces - foundational information on connector interface design and terminology.
- IEC 61755 series: Covers fibre optic connector optical interfaces - detailing polishing, ferrule geometry, and optical performance parameters.
- IEC 61754 series: Defines multiple parts of fibre optic connector interface standards for various connector types ensuring overall interoperability.
Adherence to these standards complements IEC 61754-35 by covering performance, interface compatibility, and optical alignment specifics necessary for high-integrity fibre optic interconnections in challenging environments.

4 Description
The LSHE connector family is intended to be used outdoor, in industrial and, more generally, in
harsh environments. It is therefore designed to survive under harsh conditions, according to
IEC 61753-1. A connection comprises a plug connector and a socket, each one containing an
insert with up to four termini. Each terminus hosts a 2,5 mm (nominal) ferrule, which may be
physical contact (PC) or angled PC (APC) polished. Within a connection, the ferrules are aligned
through resilient sleeves housed in an adaptor that may be fixed either on the plug side or on
the socket side (hermaphrodite connection system). Each terminus may support any type of
fibre (SM, MM or other) provided the termini facing each other in the connection contain
compatible fibres. The same applies to the polishing type (PC or APC) of the mating termini.
Within one connector, different types of fibre and termini may be used. The mechanical
connection between the plug connector and the socket is ensured by a push-pull mechanism.
5 Connector Interfaces
5.1 General
General requirements defined in IEC 61754-1 shall be applied for this document.
This document contains the following standard interfaces:
• interface IEC 61754-35-1: four-way plug connector interface;
• interface IEC 61754-35-2: four-way socket connector interface.
The plugs and sockets shown in Table 1 are intermateable.

The side and front views of the plug connector are illustrated in Figure 2 while the orientation
of the APC ferrule with respect to the connector is shown in Figure 3, where the optical
reference plane is defined as the plane passing through the nominal fibre centre and parallel to
the mechanical reference plane. The relevant dimensions are listed in Table 2.
