Specifications for particular types of winding wires - Part 70-2: Polyester glass-fibre wound resin/varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled round copper wire, temperature index 155

IEC 60317-70-2:2020 specifies the requirements of polyester glass-fibre wound resin/varnish impregnated bare, grade 1 or grade 2 enamelled round copper winding wires, temperature index 155. The impregnating agent can be, for instance, epoxy, polyester, or polyesterimide resin based. The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of IEC 60317-0-10:2017.
NOTE For this type of wire, the heat shock test is inappropriate and therefore a heat shock temperature cannot be established. Consequently, a class based on the requirements for temperature index and heat shock temperature cannot be specified.

Overview

IEC 60317-70-2:2020 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for polyester glass-fibre wound resin/varnish impregnated bare or enamelled round copper winding wires. These wires possess a temperature index of 155, indicating suitability for applications involving elevated temperatures. The standard focuses on particular types of winding wires used in electrical equipment, detailing characteristics such as construction, dimensions, electrical resistance, mechanical properties, and environmental resistances to ensure consistent quality and performance.

Key Topics

  • Material Composition: The winding wire consists of a bare or enamelled round copper conductor, wound with a combination of polyester and electrical-grade continuous-filament glass fibres impregnated with resin or varnish. Impregnating agents may be epoxy, polyester, or polyesterimide resin based.

  • Temperature Index: The wires are rated with a temperature index of 155, which defines the thermal endurance of the enamel and impregnation system under operating conditions.

  • Grades and Coatings:

    • PG1: Bare conductor with either one layer of polyester glass fibre or two layers of finer fibres.
    • PG2: Bare conductor with two layers of polyester glass fibre.
    • Enamelled wire grades include Grade 1 and Grade 2 combined with PG1 or PG2 fibre layers to meet different insulation and durability requirements.
  • Dimensions and Electrical Properties: The nominal conductor diameters and related electrical resistance values comply with IEC 60317-0-10:2017. Mechanical properties such as elongation, flexibility, and springiness are specified for optimal winding performance.

  • Testing Methods: Standardized test methods ensure quality assurance, covering aspects like resistance to solvents, abrasion, refrigerants, and hydrolysis. Note that the heat shock test is not applicable for this wire type.

  • Packaging: Requirements for packaging are addressed to ensure safe transportation and handling, maintaining wire integrity.

Applications

The polyester glass-fibre wound resin/varnish impregnated copper winding wires covered by IEC 60317-70-2:2020 are highly applicable in:

  • Electrical motors, transformers, and inductors where enhanced thermal resistance and mechanical strength are required.
  • High-performance winding applications exposed to elevated temperatures up to a temperature index of 155.
  • Industrial and commercial electrical equipment requiring robust electrical insulation combined with mechanical durability.
  • Situations demanding wires with resistance to abrasion, solvents, heat, and environmental factors for improved reliability and lifespan.

Using wires conforming to IEC 60317-70-2 ensures improved quality control, better compatibility with impregnating resins, and compliance with internationally agreed safety and performance benchmarks.

Related Standards

IEC 60317-70-2 forms part of the broader IEC 60317 series dedicated to specifications for particular types of winding wires. Other relevant standards include:

  • IEC 60317-0-10:2017: General requirements for polyester glass-fibre wound, fused, unvarnished, or resin/varnish impregnated round copper wires. This document specifies dimensions, electrical resistance, and test methods referenced by IEC 60317-70-2.

  • IEC 60851 series: Test methods for winding wires, providing the standardized procedures referenced for quality assurance and compliance testing.

  • IEC 60264 series: Packaging standards for winding wires, ensuring proper storage and transport conditions.

By adhering to these harmonized IEC standards, manufacturers, designers, and users of winding wires benefit from a consistent framework to ensure performance, safety, and interchangeability in electrical winding applications.

all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC

with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.

transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
