Overview

IEC 60335-2-11:2008/AMD2:2015 is the second amendment to the International Standard focused on the safety of household and similar electrical appliances, specifically addressing particular requirements for tumble dryers. Prepared by IEC Technical Committee 61, this amendment refines safety measures to ensure the protection of users and maintenance personnel while enhancing appliance reliability and performance.

The standard update includes critical revisions involving temperature rise limits, marking specifications, stability requirements, and the use of flammable refrigerants. It supports manufacturers, testing labs, and regulatory bodies in aligning with the latest safety protocols for tumble dryers, reinforcing compliance subject to global market demands.

Key Topics

  • Marking and Instructions

    • Removal and revision of clauses regarding appliance labeling
    • Mandatory explanation of symbol ISO 7000-0790 (2004-01) if used
    • Important warning against supplying the appliance through external switching devices such as timers or utility-controlled circuits
    • Minimum symbol height requirement of 15 mm for visibility
  • Temperature Rise and Heating Tests

    • Revised probe usage and measurement methods for accessible external surfaces
    • Continuous monitoring ensuring temperature rises do not exceed specified limits based on surface type (bare metal, coated metal, glass, ceramic, plastic) and height above the floor
    • Detailed temperature rise limits to prevent user burns and material degradation
  • Electrical Safety

    • Enhanced requirements for leakage current and electric strength tests, including combined Class I appliances
    • Clear differentiation of requirements for fixed versus non-fixed appliances regarding stability and mechanical hazards
  • Use of Flammable Refrigerants

    • Introduction of ISO 7010 W021 symbol for marking appliances using flammable refrigerants
    • Updated refrigerant classification referencing IEC 60079-20-1 and ISO 5149-1 standards
    • Guidance on labeling visibility to ensure awareness of refrigerant types and associated safety warnings
  • Mechanical Stability and Construction

    • Tests ensuring combinations of washing machines and tumble dryers remain stable and safe during operation
    • Mechanical testing related to appliance tilting and door security under force

Applications

IEC 60335-2-11:2008/AMD2:2015 applies primarily to:

  • Manufacturers of tumble dryers aiming to meet international safety standards for design, electrical components, heating elements, and refrigerant systems.
  • Testing laboratories conducting conformity assessments to verify appliance compliance with temperature limits, electrical safety, and mechanical robustness.
  • Regulators and certification bodies requiring up-to-date safety criteria to support market surveillance and product approvals.
  • Product developers incorporating flammable refrigerants into tumble dryers to enhance energy efficiency, who must apply specific labeling and safety measures.

This amendment ensures that all stakeholders can maintain product performance without compromising user safety, environmental considerations, or compliance with global safety legislation. It particularly supports the safe integration of new technologies like flammable refrigerants and updated electrical designs.

Related Standards

To fully implement IEC 60335-2-11:2008/AMD2:2015, relevant complementary standards include:

  • IEC 60335-1 – General safety requirements for household electrical appliances
  • IEC 60079-20-1 – Explosive atmospheres: Material characteristics for gas and vapor classification
  • ISO 817 – Refrigerants: Designation and safety classification
  • ISO 5149-1 – Refrigerating systems and heat pumps: Safety and environmental requirements, Part 1
  • ISO 7000 – Graphical symbols for use on equipment (notably ISO 7000-0790 symbol referenced)
  • ISO 7010 – Safety signs, including symbol W021 for flammable substances

Together, these harmonized standards provide a framework for appliance safety, electrical and mechanical integrity, environmental protection, and user information that manufacturers and regulators can adopt worldwide.

By adhering to IEC 60335-2-11:2008/AMD2:2015, stakeholders ensure that tumble dryers meet contemporary safety standards, prevent hazards associated with heating, electrical faults, and refrigerants, and promote consumer confidence in household appliance safety.

If symbol ISO 7000-0790 (2004-01) is used, its meaning shall be explained.
Add, after the existing last paragraph, as a second warning, the following new paragraph:
WARNING: The appliance must not be supplied through an external switching device, such as
a timer, or connected to a circuit that is regularly switched on and off by a utility.
7.14 In the addition, replace the requirement by the following:
The height of symbol ISO 7000-0790 (2004-01) shall be at least 15 mm.

11.3 Replace the first sentence of the first paragraph of the addition by the following:

Where the accessible external surfaces are suitably flat and permit access for the test probe

of Figure 101, then it may be used to measure the temperature rises of accessible external

surfaces specified in Table 101.

Replace the existing note by the following:
NOTE 101 The probe can be held in place using a laboratory stand clamp or similar device.
11.8 In the addition, replace the first paragraph by the following new text and new table:
During the test, the temperature rises are monitored continuously and shall not exceed the
values shown in Table 3 and Table 101.

The temperature rise limit applies also for plastic material having a metal finish of thickness less than
0,1 mm.
c
When the thickness of plastic coating does not exceed 0,4 mm, the temperature rise limits of coated metal or
glass and ceramic apply.
d
If these values are exceeded, the test is allowed to be repeated with the appliance moved away from the test
corner side wall. The test is repeated for 1 cycle.
e
Temperature rises are not measured on
– the underside of appliances intended to be used on a working surface or floor;
– the rear surface of appliances;
– surfaces that are inaccessible to a 75 mm diameter probe having a hemispherical end.
