Overview
IEC 60317-38:1992 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for particular types of winding wires. This part 38 of the IEC 60317 series focuses on polyester or polyesterimide enamelled round copper wires that are overcoated with polyamide-imide and classified as class 200 with a bonding layer. These wires are widely used in electrical equipment for their excellent mechanical and thermal properties, ensuring reliable performance in winding applications.
The standard defines detailed specifications including physical dimensions, electrical resistance, mechanical strength, thermal endurance, and adhesive properties of the insulation layers. It represents a critical guideline for manufacturers, designers, and quality assurance professionals involved in the production and application of insulated copper wires in electromechanical devices.
Key Topics
- Material Composition: Specifies the use of round copper wire coated with polyester or polyesterimide enamel, further overcoated with a polyamide-imide layer, providing enhanced insulation and bonding.
- Class 200 Thermal Rating: Defines the wire insulation’s ability to withstand temperatures up to 200°C, assuring durability under high thermal stress.
- Bonding Layer: Includes requirements for an adhesion-promoting layer between polyester/polyesterimide enamel and the polyamide-imide overcoat, boosting mechanical and thermal layer integrity.
- Test Methods: Specifies comprehensive test procedures covering:
- Electrical resistance and dielectric breakdown voltage
- Mechanical properties such as elongation, springiness, flexibility, and adhesion
- Resistance to heat shock, solvents, abrasion, transformer oil, and refrigerants
- Thermal performance including temperature index and thermoplastic behavior
- Solderability and bonding by heat or solvent
- Dimensional Standards: Details nominal conductor diameters and tolerances to ensure consistency and compatibility with winding machinery and applications.
- Packaging: Enforces guidelines for proper packaging to maintain product integrity during transport and storage as per IEC 60264.
Applications
The IEC 60317-38 standard is essential for industries requiring high-quality enamelled copper winding wires with superior thermal and mechanical properties. Typical applications include:
- Electric Motors and Generators: Ensures winding wires can withstand mechanical stresses and elevated temperatures encountered in rotating electrical machines.
- Transformers and Inductors: Provides insulation capable of enduring voltage stresses and thermal cycling in electromagnetic coils.
- High-performance Electrical Devices: Serves requirements for aerospace, automotive, and industrial equipment where reliability and longevity of winding wires are critical.
- Electromechanical Components: Applicable in relays, solenoids, and other devices needing durable insulated wires with strong bond layers for enhanced mechanical stability.
Related Standards
- IEC 60317 Series: Covers various other types of winding wire specifications to address multiple insulation materials and temperature classes.
- IEC 60851: Defines standardized methods for testing electrical insulated wires ensuring quality and consistency.
- IEC 60264: Provides packaging requirements tailored to protect winding wires during handling and shipping.
- ISO Standards: Collaborates closely with IEC for quality and environmental management systems in manufacturing processes.
By adhering to IEC 60317-38, manufacturers and users benefit from standardized, reliable insulation specifications that promote safety, performance, and international compatibility of polyester or polyesterimide enamelled copper wires with polyamide-imide overcoating. This standard is a cornerstone for electrical winding wire quality assurance and sustainable product development.

AVANT-PROPOS
