Overview
IEC 60317-17:2010 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) detailing the specifications for polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular copper wire, classified under thermal class 105. This standard specifically covers the requirements for enamelled rectangular copper winding wire with a sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal resin. The resin may be chemically modified provided it retains its original chemical identity and fulfills all wire requirements.
Designed primarily for electrical winding applications, this standard aims to ensure consistent quality, performance, and safety of class 105 enamelled winding wires. The "class 105" rating refers to a minimum temperature index of 105°C and a heat shock temperature of at least 155°C, indicating the wire's ability to withstand elevated operating temperatures.
The latest edition includes a key update referencing the transformer oil resistance test method specified in IEC 60851-4, ensuring compatibility with evolving testing protocols.
Key Topics
- Scope and Material: Specifies dimensions, mechanical and electrical properties of rectangular copper wires coated with polyvinyl acetal enamel for winding applications.
- Thermal Class: Rated for class 105, supporting operation at elevated temperatures up to 105°C temperature index and 155°C heat shock.
- Wire Dimensions: Widths range between 2.00 mm and 16.00 mm, and thicknesses between 0.80 mm and 5.60 mm, including wires of grade 1 and grade 2.
- Testing and Measurements:
- Electrical resistance and elongation are defined according to IEC 60317-0-2.
- Mechanical tests include flexibility (mandrel winding and stretching tests), springiness, and heat shock tolerance.
- Chemical resistance tests focus on solvents and transformer oil, based on IEC 60851-4 methodologies.
- Breakdown voltage tested at 105°C temperature.
- Inapplicable Tests: Some tests such as resistance to abrasion, cut-through, solderability, and pinhole tests are deemed inappropriate for this wire type.
- Packaging: Guidelines follow Clause 30 of IEC 60317-0-2 to ensure proper handling and protection during storage and transport.
Applications
IEC 60317-17 enamelled rectangular copper winding wires are widely used in electrical equipment that requires highly reliable and thermally stable winding wire. Common applications include:
- Transformers: For winding coils requiring resistance to thermal and environmental stress.
- Electric Motors: Insulated wire for stator and rotor windings subjected to mechanical and thermal loads.
- Inductors and Coils: Components where precise wire dimensions and electrical properties are critical.
- Electromechanical Devices: Where long-term durability and chemical resistance of the wire coatings are important.
- High-temperature Electrical Assemblies: Use in devices requiring insulation that withstands continuous elevated temperatures without degradation.
Related Standards
This standard is part of the IEC 60317 series covering specifications for particular types of winding wires, and references several key documents including:
- IEC 60317-0-2: General requirements for enamelled rectangular copper wire providing foundational test methods and dimensional criteria.
- IEC 60851-4: Methods of test for winding wires, specifically chemical properties and resistance to transformer oil.
- IEC 60264: Packaging standards for winding wires to ensure proper shipment and storage.
By adhering to IEC 60317-17:2010, manufacturers, designers, and engineers align with internationally recognized quality benchmarks, ensuring compatibility and safety in electrical winding applications using polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular copper wire class 105. This contributes to the reliability and longevity of electrical equipment operating in demanding thermal and chemical environments.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.

INTRODUCTION
This part of IEC 60317 is one of a series which deals with insulated wires used for windings in
electrical equipment. The series has three groups describing
1) winding wires and test methods (IEC 60851);
2) specifications for particular types of winding wire (IEC 60317);
3) packaging of winding wires (IEC 60264).

SPECIFICATIONS FOR PARTICULAR
TYPES OF WINDING WIRES –
Part 17: Polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular
copper wire, class 105
1 Scope
This part of IEC 60317 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding
wire of class 105 with a sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal resin, which may be modified
providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire
requirements.
NOTE A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to
enhance certain performance or application characteristics.
Class 105 is a thermal class that requires a minimum temperature index of 105 and a heat
shock temperature of at least 155 °C.
The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily
that at which it is recommended that the wire be operated and this will depend on many
factors, including the type of equipment involved.
The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is
– width: min. 2,00 mm max. 16,00 mm;
– thickness: min. 0,80 mm max. 5,60 mm.
Wires of grade 1 and grade 2 are included in this specification and apply to the complete
range of conductors.
The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified ratio
width/thickness are given in IEC 60317-0-2.
