Overview
IEC 60317-62:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for polyester glass fibre wound rectangular copper winding wires. These wires are bare or enamelled, impregnated with minimum class 200 resin or varnish, and are designed for applications requiring a temperature index of 200°C. The standard covers nominal conductor dimensions in width ranging from 2.0 mm to 16.0 mm, and thickness from 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm. This document should be used together with IEC 60317-0-8:2012, which details general requirements for similar types of wires.
The standard ensures consistent quality and performance of these specialized copper winding wires, crucial for electrical equipment requiring reliability at elevated temperatures. It excludes several tests found in other winding wire specifications because some, like heat shock or solvent resistance, are considered inappropriate for this type of wire.
Key Topics
Material & Construction: The wire consists of rectangular copper conductors wound with polyester glass fibre that is impregnated with resin or varnish. This structure provides mechanical strength and electrical insulation suitable for high-temperature applications.
Temperature Index: The polyester glass fibre covering and impregnating agent guarantee a minimum temperature index of 200°C, making the wire suitable for electrical equipment exposed to long-term thermal stress.
Dimensions: The standard strictly defines the width (2.0–16.0 mm) and thickness (0.80–5.60 mm) of the rectangular copper wire, including specified width-to-thickness ratios, ensuring accurate compatibility with winding assemblies.
Grades & Covers: The wire is available in multiple grades:
- PG1: one polyester glass fibre covering over bare copper conductor,
- PG2: two polyester glass fibre coverings over bare copper conductor,
- Grade 1 and Grade 2 enamelled conductor options combined with PG1 or PG2 covers, providing flexibility for different insulation and electrical characteristics.
Testing and Performance Criteria: Several mechanical and electrical properties such as elongation, electrical resistance, flexibility, adherence, and breakdown voltage are standardized. Many typical tests like heat shock, resistance to solvents, and solderability are excluded due to the wire's specific construction and use cases.
Packaging: Packaging requirements follow IEC 60317-0-8:2012, focusing on protecting the wire during storage and transport to preserve its quality.
Applications
IEC 60317-62 standardized polyester glass fibre wound copper winding wires are essential in various electrical and electronic devices, including:
- Electric motors and generators – where the wire’s high temperature resistance ensures durability and performance under thermal stress.
- Transformers and inductors – benefiting from the rectangular cross-section for optimized winding density and electrical efficiency.
- High-performance electrical coils – where mechanical strength and electrical insulation are critical.
- Aerospace and automotive electrical components – that demand enhanced thermal tolerance and resistance to environmental factors.
- Industrial equipment requiring reliable insulating wire capable of withstanding continuous operation at elevated temperatures.
The polyester glass fibre reinforcement combined with class 200 resin impregnation makes these wires suitable for use in harsh thermal environments where standard winding wires might degrade.
Related Standards
- IEC 60317 Series: Covers specifications for various types of winding wires, providing a comprehensive framework for electrical winding wire standards.
- IEC 60317-0-8:2012: The general requirements part that complements IEC 60317-62 by providing fundamental terminology, testing methods, and dimension criteria for polyester glass fibre wound and resin impregnated winding wires.
- IEC 60851: Focuses on test methods for winding wires, applicable for validating performance attributes.
- IEC 60264: Addresses packaging specifications specifically for winding wires to ensure preservation and traceability.
Summary
IEC 60317-62:2012 is a critical standard for manufacturers, designers, and purchasers of insulated rectangular copper winding wires reinforced with polyester glass fibre and impregnated with resin or varnish to meet a temperature index of 200°C. Its clear dimensional, performance, and construction requirements ensure the production of high-quality copper winding wires suitable for demanding electrotechnical applications. Adherence to this standard guarantees enhanced insulation reliability, mechanical durability, and thermal endurance, supporting the optimal function of electrical equipment operating in elevated temperature environments.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.

established. Consequently, a class based on the requirements for temperature index and heat shock temperature
cannot be specified.
The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is:
– width: min. 2,0 mm; max. 16,0 mm;
– thickness: min. 0,80 mm; max. 5,60 mm.
The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified width/thickness
ratio are according to IEC 60317-0-8.
