Overview
IEC 60317-60-1:2020 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for polyester glass-fibre wound fused, unvarnished, bare, or enamelled rectangular copper winding wires. These wires have a temperature index of 155, meaning they are designed to operate reliably at elevated temperatures up to 155°C.
This standard applies to specific types of rectangular copper wires used primarily in electrical windings, such as in motors, transformers, and inductors. It defines the physical, electrical, and mechanical properties of the wires and their polyester-glass fibre insulation. Importantly, IEC 60317-60-1 clarifies that heat shock tests are not applicable to this wire type, and thus heat shock temperature cannot be established for classification purposes.
The standard covers a range of conductor dimensions, including widths from 2.0 mm to 16.0 mm and thicknesses from 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm, providing a dependable framework for manufacturers and users of specialized copper winding wires.
Key Topics
Wire Composition: The wires have a unique covering composed of fused polyester and electrical-grade continuous-filament glass fibres. The polyester fibre content does not exceed 50% by weight, ensuring high thermal and mechanical resilience.
Varieties of Wire Grades:
- Unvarnished bare copper with one (PG1) or two (PG2) layers of glass fibre.
- Enamelled variations corresponding to grade 1 or grade 2 enamel, combined with one or two layers of polyester glass fibre (e.g., Grade 1 PG1, Grade 2 PG2).
Dimensional Requirements: The wire's width and thickness must conform to carefully controlled ratios and dimensions, as specified in IEC 60317-0-8:2019, a related general requirements standard.
Performance Criteria: The standard incorporates tests for electrical resistance, elongation, springiness, flexibility, adherence, resistance to abrasion, solvents, refrigerants, and more. These ensure the wire performs reliably under operational stresses.
Temperature Index: Defined at 155°C to confirm suitability for high-temperature applications in electrical devices.
Exclusions: The heat shock test is declared inappropriate for these wires because their construction does not support heat shock classification, differentiating them from other winding wire types.
Applications
IEC 60317-60-1:2020 winding wires are designed for applications demanding robust electrical and mechanical properties in high-temperature environments. Common uses include:
- Electrical Motors: For winding coils requiring high temperature resistance and mechanical strength.
- Transformers and Inductors: Where precise electrical resistance and insulation are critical.
- Industrial Electrical Equipment: Any device involving electromagnetic coils exposed to temperatures up to 155°C.
- Energy Conversion Devices: Components that demand durable, stable copper windings with enhanced insulation.
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers can ensure their winding wires meet stringent international quality requirements, improving product reliability and performance in demanding environments.
Related Standards

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
