Overview
EN 60127-4:2005/A2:2013 is a European standard that specifies requirements for miniature universal modular fuse-links (UMF) used in electrical and electronic equipment. This amendment enhances Part 4 of the EN 60127 series, which covers both through-hole and surface mount types of UMF fuse-links. The standard aligns with the IEC 60127-4:2005/A2:2012 edition, ensuring harmonization across European and international safety and performance criteria.
The standard aims to standardize the design, testing, and performance of miniature fuse-links to provide reliable overcurrent protection in low-voltage electrical circuits. It supports compliance with safety regulations such as the Low Voltage Directive (LVD 2006/95/EC), thus contributing to device safety and operational integrity.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
The document applies to universal modular fuse-links designed for both through-hole and surface mount assembly on printed circuit boards (PCBs). It sets forth test methods, performance requirements, and safety objectives relevant to these components.Fuse-Link Types Covered
- Through-Hole Fuse-Links: Designed for insertion into PCBs via holes, ensuring mechanical stability and electrical connection.
- Surface Mount Fuse-Links: Compact fuse-links for surface mounting, supporting miniaturization and automated assembly.
Testing and Quality Assurance
The amendment updates specific normative references for environmental and solderability testing, including:- IEC 60068-2-20:2008 for solderability and solder heat resistance – ensuring terminals withstand soldering processes without damage.
- IEC 60068-2-58:2004 for surface mount device testing under thermal stress.
Solderability Requirements
Both fuse-link types must be subjected to rigorous solderability tests to ensure solder coatings are smooth, bright, and free from critical imperfections like pinholes or de-wetted areas. These tests guarantee robust electrical connections post-manufacture.Compliance and Implementation Dates
National standard bodies within CENELEC were required to adopt this amendment by December 2013, with conflicting standards withdrawn by January 2016, promoting uniform adherence across member countries.
Practical Applications
Electronic Device Protection
UMF fuse-links complying with EN 60127-4:2005/A2:2013 provide standardized protective solutions against overcurrent in compact electronic equipment, enhancing device longevity and user safety.Automatic Assembly Lines
Specify surface mount types from this standard to streamline automated PCB manufacturing processes, benefiting from tested solderability and thermal resistance characteristics.Design Flexibility
The universal modular fuse-link design facilitates easy replacement and maintenance, reducing downtime in consumer electronics, industrial control systems, and telecommunications hardware.Regulatory Compliance
Using fuse-links that meet EN 60127-4:2005/A2:2013 assists manufacturers in demonstrating compliance with European product safety directives, facilitating market access.
